Hey Guys!

My little brother is coming back for leave in the month of June. We were plannin on headin up to Kelly Creek for the last week of the month. I have never fished it and have heard that some years you can not get up to the river untill after the 4th. But considering the mild winter we had we are planning on going up for 5 nights at the end of the month. My question to you would be what flies are the go to's up there. Any pointers would be great, im just trying to make sure that my brother can get into some fish when he is home from serving our country! Let me know what you guys think.

Not true my friend. Have caught many fish in great water before July 4th only to come back and hear others say "the water is too high", so clearly it is a matter of perspective. I also think this belief causes the crowds to grow significantly after the 4th. If that is when he is home, go catch some fishies. It is a beautiful place. Next time we chat I will give you some more specifics.

I usually fish at end of June and fishing is typically good. Check out other rivers in the area too. Size 12-14 stimulators, Parachutes, comparaduns in 16-18 for the more pressured waters close to road. Any bead head nymph, streamer in the deeper runs. If you decide to travel through Montana make sure Hoodoo Pass is open at the end of June.

If you can, go the week of the 20th-26th. The following week it will just be a zoo as the hordes stream in for the holiday weekend.

Be sure to carry to carry some parachute mayflys in gray-brown tones and don't be afraid to fish 16-18's either. Just at dusk big wary cutts will fall for a skillfully presented small fly.

Enjoy.

Hey Fellas! Thanks so much for all the pointers and suggestions. I really appreciate all the help. Having some good intell will make the planning of the trip so much smoother. Just need to make sure im loaded up with the right flies to catch those Cutts! Im pretty stoked for the trip, we have done this the last 2 summers when he is home and its always one of the best weeks of the summer!

Your timing should be good to avoid the summer crowds, which start around the July 4 weekend. I'm guessing the water levels will be good late June this year. Hoodoo Pass usually opens Memorial Day or shortly after.

Also, Kelly and the NFC have an early summer caddis hatch. In nice, warm weather they will come off mid-day. In seams below riffles cutties will often key on the emergers, so swinging soft hackles can be a blast. A size 10 Green Drake Wulff is a must-have pattern for early season fishing on all of the N. Idaho cutthroat streams. Enjoy your time, its beautiful country!

I'm going over there to hike and fish June 24th to the 28th. I have the Kelly Forks Cabin reserved. When are you planning on going over? JR.

Hey JR, sounds like you guys have a sweet spot to stay. I have never been up in the Kelly Creek area, spent alittle time around Orifino riding 4wheelers and fishing some small backwaters. Im super stoked for the week, we will be there from the 20th-24th right now. But the dates are up to change. Have you spent time in the area much?

for what it is worth, here are flies that were successful for me....

stimulator size 8-16 (lol)
hoppers (lol)
black and olive wolly bugger (lol)
and one of those high floating spun deer hare gigs. cant recall the name atm. has a small tail, spun deer body (white/light in color) and a heavy hackle. this was really effective in the fast pocket water.
