Ol' krusty, before he gets too damn old, is gonna investigate the world of tenkara this season....

Not to the extent of actually buying one of them fancy tenkara dapping poles, but rather I've invested in an Eagle Claw 6.5' fiberglass 3 wt flyrod ($30), and throwing on one of my ancient automatic fly reels (great for preventing dropped line loops from being swept downstream and snagged in skinny water log jams).

Gonna revisit the brushy trout tangles and beaver ponds of my youth, reeking of bug juice, farts and chewing tobacco.

Who says you can't go home again?

Calela's sell what they call "crappie poles" in different lengths. They're telescopic and all fiberglass. With the current sale they're ten bucks. I'm thinking of getting one and calling it American style Tenkara.

Tenkara has never even slightly appealed to me. Probably because I like the sound of a reel screaming in protest on a large fish.
To be fair, I grew up dapping dry flies only on small, brushy streams for small, wild cutthroat and brookies. I will probably swing back that way someday, but not anytime soon.

I'm sure Huck Finn and all the Tenkara experts here can cast nice loops with just tippet, to drag free presentations using a willow branch. I just wish you'd explained it to me before I wasted all that time and money on my Tenkara gear.

This is what I used on our pier on Bay St. Louis when I was a kid. Caught many a croaker, speckled trout, flounder and redfish with that set up. Now they are $300 and called Tenkara. You should try to land a 100lb ahi with a straight pole and flip it in a boat before it gets its head down. Mems.
We use to fish in cut offs & t-shirts,now you need five hundred dollar waders and fifty dollar shirts

Actually, Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer had "Tenkara" rods, but they just didn't know it. Hickory stick, with string and cork bobber is about the same as the fancy Tenkara fishing outfits and probably more productive too.
That's a cork INDICATOR, thank you very much.

I have used the Palsa stick-on "indicators". They work better than the big red and white plastic bobbers most people on this thread use. With a 14" rod, high sticking, with mono leader in the air you can get a much quicker hook set than a short rod with a heavy fly line stuck to the surface.

Or you can just keep the line tight and be connected directly to the take. Add a short but overpriced rod, guides, a reel full of unused line and you can call it "euro-nymphing".

I got nuthin agin Tenkara fishin', but seeing krusty wadin' around sportin' his pole in a beaverpond wearin' a soggy kimono would probably not be a pretty picture.

Likely end up under a court order to stay at least 200' from legitimate anglers.

I have one...2 years now...it was a gift from Ellen...an inexpensive little telescoping thing that is about 20" long when not extended...haven't used it . Ellen might have been trying to tell me something. Things will get better. I need better weather to spice things up a bit.
