Hey Gang,
Just picked up a sage VT2 for multiple purposes.

1. nymphing bigger waters (the D, the lower sac, tc..)
2. Throwing Big dries, the foamy kind that suck to cast in the wind
3. a trip to Jurassic Lake this Dec. Probably going to be pretty stiff winds down there!

Looking for any line recommendations. Thinking of the steelhead/salmon taper but up in the air about that decision as well as to overline it or not.

any opinions?

Was that an Airflo 40+ in a 6wt or 7wt? I too just got a 6wt vt2, a 9'6" saltwater model. A pretty sweet rod for sure. I have a 7wt outbound on the way to try on it. It throws a cheap Sci-Anglers 7wt floater Ok but I'm sure it will sing when I find the right line. First fish on it was a ~2lb rainbow with the spirit of a chum! I was very pleased with the feel and the response of the rod during the fight.

I think the VT-2 loads better with the Rio Grand. The half weight extra really makes this rod a rocket launcher. I have cast the gold and the grand on my vt-2 and I went with the grand.

I have the steelhead/salmon taper on my 9'6" 6wt VT2 and have been thinking about switching it out for something else. It doesn't quite shoot like I want it to and feels clumsy if I push it too hard. It too is my saltwater rod and love flinging my intermediate with it that rod, but the steelhead taper is a bit more difficult to keep tight loops with. It's been great for roll casting, picking up and shooting easily, but not for any kind of distance.

Airflo 40+
seriously though; if there's a better line for casting large flies, fighting wind, or roll casting, I haven't been told about it. I can cast massive weighted flies on my 6wt with this line. I was roll casting large, weighted bunny leeches across the Methow last week, and today fighting huge wind gusts while casting on a local spot with no problems. This thing just plain LAUNCHES

I've not cast every line in every situation by any stretch, but I'm with Evan here. I have really enjoyed all the AF 40+ lines. I even have one that I use for double rigs that I cut back about 5' of the front taper after getting that recommendation from another member. I'm not saying that you are ready to cut your line back, but the AF 40+ has been delivering flies better than my skill level deserves for a while now. Best of luck.
