I work in Mukilteo and have found a number of places around there and the south everett area that fit the bill.

Hung Pho has the largest (mostly) Vietnamese menu I've seen, nearly all is great. Try the ginger duck hot pot or the pork and prawns hot pot.
King Noodle is awesome, only been there a couple of times, but great both times. Hand shaved noodles that you can watch being made.
Janbo, great chinese, less american than most chinese places.
Indigo, amazing fried chicken with jalepeno gravy.
The taco truck at Mary's Towing. Probably my favorite carnitas.
Curry's on Casino road, by the 7-11. Great Indian cuisine, fast, reasonable. Usually have goat as one of the entree choices. My favorite naan.

As for local chain burger places, never forget Burgermeister.

In my hometown, Bozeman,

Cafe Zydeco. Try everything, but return for cheap red beans and rice with andouille sausage and crawfish ettouffe.
Frank's Deli, great prime rib sandwiches
La Parilla, just order the daily special...unless it is vegetarian--what are we, men or rabbits?
The Western Cafe. Step back into the fifties...you could go there every day for ten years and be a new regular.
The Oasis. I heard the quality went downhill, but I don't want to believe it. Make reservations and skip Outback.

I'm with you on avoiding chain restaurants...a couple I've found nearby:

Matt's Place in Butte redeems the entire town...oldest Drive-In in Montana...only has about 16 stools but great burgers and fries...Other-worldly huckleberry shakes in the summer.

Best Burger in 4-Corners (west of Bozeman) is a great place to stop after a day in the Gallatin Canyon or on your way to Yellowstone...or on your way anywhere.

Every time I drive by the Outback and see a full parking lot, I shake my head; I've asked my wife countless times, "Why would anyone eat at Outback when the Oasis is just down the road?"

Yeah, I had left Bozeman when the Outback came in. Outback's are familiar and decent enough.

Is Sir Scott's still maintaining the quality?

No complaints from last time I was there, which was around January. Prime rib still rolls my eyes back in my head.

I've heard good things about Land of Magic again, too. Almost enough to make me try it again.

Good to hear. It'd be nice to know that both places were doing well.

I'm a rib steak guy, personally, but the times I've had the finger steaks at Oasis I've been very happy.

I live in Dillon. There is no place here that turns my head around. You have Sparky's, Blacktail Station, The Lions Den, Papa "T's", Klondike, The Breakfasts in Sparky's were good but they quit serving breakfast. The Lions Den only serves Lunch and dinner. Same with Blacktail Station. Prices are high in the Lions Den and Blacktail Station. Food is so-so.

You also have the Pita Pit and MacDonald's and Dairy Queen. A few bars serve food, but I don't eat in any of them. Plus a Taco bus sits here also.

Little Viking Drive-In is a routine stop in Stevenson WA on the way home from trips in the CR Gorge. Good burgers, great shakes and ice-cream. No problem going to the drive through window with a pontoon on the roof.

55 years or so ago there used to be a small burger place between Lynnwood and Everett on Highway 99 heading south. I forgot what the name was but they had the best burgers in Washington State. I can still remember how they taste.

They expanded and the place went to hell.

One of my long-time favorites is the Country Cousin at the southbound Centralia exit on I-5. It's one of the only places where I've been able to find home-made corned beef hash on the breakfast menu; definitely one of my regular stops when I'm headed that way. Another out-of-the-way spot is Barbie's Café at Seabeck on the eastern shore of Hood Canal; the best hashbrowns ever. I've been trying to find an excuse to get back to the Beehive Restaurant in Montesano for a breakfast of razor clams, eggs and hashbrowns; definitely not common fare.
