I was curious to see how many people own Adventure series reels and what percentage of people have had issues with the bearings. I haven't had issues yet but also haven't used them that much. I have heard some ugly rumors though... Apparently the bearings aren't stainless steel and will rust. I've also heard that the plastic retainer that holds the bearings has a tendency to melt down under heavy loads. Has anybody heard of this?

I have one on my 8-weight that I use mostly in salt water for coho. I've landed ocean-bright fish well into the teens with it, more than a couple that have taken me into the backing. So far no problems.

I used to know it all---but now that I'm older I seem to forget it all.

I have the Adventure 5 for 5wt line. Had the bearing replaced once. Got sand in it and went down to the water to wash it out and when I went to put it together it wobbled. Lost the bearing. The housing for the bearing is plastic,the retainer is plastic. the only metel is the bearing and the screw holding it in place. Now when ever I'm near sand I make sure that the reel is a long way from it. For some reason this reel seems to just like sand. I just feel that this reel needs to be handled with kid gloves. Not paws like I seem to have.

I've used an Adventure 5 for a couple of years now with absolutely no problems. The rollers, which function as bearings on the retrieve, operate as a roller clutch when line is being taken out. They clamp up tightly on the spindle; no movement, no friction, no heat. The drag itself is in the sealed unit at the base of the spindle where all of the braking takes place.
