Modifying goretex waders?

718 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  PhilR
When my buddies and I were up in BC last month, we endured some weather. Included was a lot of rain, bail out the pram quantities of rain. I have some very good quality pvc coated Helly Hansen bibs, they keep me dry. I use a pair of barn boots under them. Sometimes (well, once or twice) I need to get out of or into the boat in water that gets to the top of my barn boots so I started wearing an old pair of goretex waders with flats booties. Great rain gear, pain to pull down to pee (jacket, pfd).

Okay, I thought why not cut off the top of these old waders and make them waist high? If I do this, what would be the best method for gluing a hem and adding a few belt loops? Am I nuts?

Sew in an 1/8" elastic bungie cord and put a cord lock on it. Easy to cinch up or loosen to remove. No belt needed or loops.

If it doesn't work, take a look at these.

I initially bought mine for occasional use and they have become my goto unless wading deep.

That's what I should do! Just buy what works instead of "cheaping out" - those are very reasonably priced, thanks Dean!
If it already has loops for a wading belt, you should be good to go. Sew, glue, or singe the cut edge of the fabric. I'd just use barge cement, or something similar to glue on some belt loops.
