Hi folks

Contemplating spending a couple days a friend and I have off in late May and early June by going on a road trip with my fly road.

Would prefer to walk and wade.

Wondering if there's any fishing in n Montana at the end of May and early June - or are the rivers all blown out.

I've got other options - but have never fished Montana.

Any thoughts or observations would be most welcome.

You will be coming during the peak of run-off so all the Freestone rivers will be blown. I'd look at tailwaters or stillwaters.

The July time slot would be my suggestion. The later May early June can be great, but also can be terrible due to runoff.

I'm guessing most will still be blown out, this year, during that time. Swimmy is right, I'd concentrate on the tailwaters.

Wait, can you clarify if your options are late May - early June? Or late May or early July?

If it is early July, just about everything will be in shape.

Look for little blue lines on the maps. The big blue lines may be pretty brown.
You could check in with some of the local fly shops to see how conditions are on the waters you want to fish

Late May — early June, as pointed out is run off. Tailwaters are an option but one everyone else knows about. Expect lots of company. Another option is stillwaters.

I like the Upper Madison when it's high and muddy. You might not get any on top, but the nymph and streamer fishing can be best fishing you get all year. The fish will be actively looking for salmonfly nymphs.
