I've never been there, but I would consider the Green in Utah and the San Juan in New Mexico. Just depends on the route you want to take and how far out of the way you want to travel...

What part of Texas are you moving too? The gulf area has some great speckled 'trout' and red fish that can be caught on a fly. You can often sight fish for them.

Most rivers in texas look like a mud flow but there are few that hold trout and are quite pretty. The guadalupe is one, I forget the others.

Of course you'll have to try your luck at bass fishing while your there. And if you've never seen one, you really should try to catch an alligator gar. I've seen these that are over 12 ft long (think fresh water baracuda - with a nearly bullet proof hide). There is also some big crappies down there. And of course, there are monster catfish - but good luck with the fly rod...

Oh, and keep an eye out for the fire ants, rattlers, cotton mouths, copper heads, scorpians, and other nasties that like to hang out in the good fishing spots... Believe it or not, when bait fishing for catfish, i've hooked tons of turtles (watch out for the snappers) and even a gator or 2. Gee, now I know why I like WA so much

Yes the Juan in Northwestern New Mexico is a good bet, being as i have been there dozens of times. You can hit the river anytime of the day, and time of the year and can catch many fish. Watch out though, it gets incredibly crowded. If you want more info, just reply to this message and i can give you any info you want.

thanks for all of the replys, I am actually use to the Bass fishing and such, I have only been in the NW for the last 7 years, I am moving back to Austin so there will be some stocked trout nearby. Yes I am really looking forward to being with all of the stinging and biting critters again. :ANGRY

We will see how it goes.

New Mexico offers a lot more than the San Juan... although not many will let you in on the good spots. This year has been particularly dry, but some tried and true spots include: the Red River just above the confluence with the Rio Grande, the Pecos River above the Village of Pecos, the Rio Costilla below the reservoir and nearby Latir Lakes, and the Rio Grande by Pilar. The San Juan is the grandaddy of them all- be ready to practice your dead-drift technique and stop by the local shops for the latest reports.

Southwestern Colorado has some nice spots as well... the Dolores and the Animas rivers will fish nicely in fall.

As a New Mexico native, I was spoiled fihing some of these spots...I don't quite understand how some of these beautiful rivers up here don't carry the same population of trout as we seemed to have in Colorado and New Mexico.

I am also a new mexico native who lived in Farmington. The animas has some good fishing year round, and some other areas near durango. But you are bass fishing so i guess i went off on a tangent
