Ending my float at Ringer Loop yesterday I noted three vehicles with their windows broken out. I called it in and was advised by the Kittitas Sheriffs department that this has been a weekly occurance throughout the canyon. Guess there is no escaping these dirt bag methheads looking for anything to sell for quick cash. Be advised!!

If the cops are aware of this, it would seem to be a simple matter to set up a sting operation. At least a game cam hidden. Motion sensor cameras are a dime a dozen now days.

Car break ins are serious low priority for police. As true for Seattle as it is for Ellensburg and Thrall. Also low on their priority list are tweakers who've had their asses beat within an inch of their life after doing something stupid.

This has led to two of the most valuable lessons I've learned in the years I've been fishing the WA forests: 1) Don't travel with anything nice you don't want broken/stolen, and 2) be prepared to maul a motherfucker with a MagLite when that situation arises.

I was broken into when I lived and fished in Washington. Had a lot of stuff stolen. Even though I got with my insurance carrier, I never got all back what was stolen. You might get back what was took but the sentimental value was gone.

Where the hell are the vigilantes when you need them? It seems that at some point someone would set up his own sting and hide out in rifle range until the tweakers showed up. A bullet a few inches in front of their nose would deter the bravest tweaker.

A long time friend of mine was driving across a remote area in Nevada in a pickup with gear in the bed. His wife and adult daughter were along and they were doing some light rock hounding and stopping occasionally to check out rock formations. At one point they climbed to the top of a hill and Toby-out of habit-took a rifle with him. As they neared the top a vehicle pulled up behind the truck and two guys got out and started going through the contents of the pickup bed. Toby hollered down at them to get the hell away from his truck and they responded with the customary "FU!" At that point Toby put a round literally between the guys legs and the crises was over.

Another story out of BC involved some tweakers at a remote lake driving around that were obviously not fishermen. They stopped and looked in the vehicles to see what they could find then moved on to the next one. The owner of one of the rigs happened to be sitting in the shade eating a sandwich when they showed up. He was the tweakers worst nightmare as he was unseen and had a 30.06 across his lap. When they stopped at his rig he had already figured out what was going down and was ready. He put a round through the open windows about 6'' in front of their noses that caught their immediate attention.

Maybe we need to take a designated defender on our trips like you have a designated driver for a bachelor party. Someone who doesn't fish that day but takes a scoped rifle, some snacks and a book and just hangs out till trouble shows up. A tire shot out or a bullet through the windshield would likely be a good deterrent.

Sad fact about today in America is you end up in jail for doing that stuff. I've had friends catch thieves and the thieves try to make them pull guns on them so they can call the cops, whole situation is fucked.

There is a reason that SSS stands for: shoot, shovel, shut up. Even the mothers of tweakers don't miss them when they're gone. So who's going to file the missing persons report with the police.
Must be from a different forum, round these parts sss means, shoot your mouth off, stand behind keyboard, suck at life

It's a pretty sad testament to where things are heading in the state when police make a statement like that. The decease is spreading from Pugetropolis.

Cops are too busy writing speeding tickets and duis. That's where the money is.

I am surprised that here in The Driftless, break-ins are not a bigger issue. There are plenty of tweakers around here, from what the locals tell me. Vernon County, where Viroqua (hub of the Driftless) is located, is the poorest county in Wisconsin, but looking at police logs, little of this type of thing happens.
