It is an early one this year in the Oregon high country.... the maples are turning.... it dipped into the high 30's while camping at night... and my favorite edible invasive species is moving into the inlets to do their thang.... got to love those huge regulation sigs at the trailhead that say: No limit on size or quantity of brook trout.... fine by me.... tight lines....

Me too. I like em all, though. But a giant brown in Washington is a particularly sweet guilty pleasure, especially since I know F&W shock em out there.

I reckon I just view myself as one invasive species having fun pursuing other invasive species - certain fish & Pheasants.

Anyone know what browns are like as table fare?? That is probably the only trout I have not eaten for no other reason than I usually do not target browns and the ones I have landed were so damned pretty they had to go back evasive species or not....
I ate my share of them when I was a kid - that "fish on Friday" thing and my Sainted Mother strictly adhered to the tenet. They tasted pretty much like any other fried trout near as I can recall.

I kept a big one out of the Columbia once. About a six pounder. I was surprised at how pink the meat was, and how delicious it was. That was from big, deep, cold water though.

Okay, I thought it was one of those oxymoronic statements. My bad. :)

I'm going to get the bigger one next time. Had him on, and I froze up, broke me off. Total rookie mistake, after 22 yrs of fishing, all I learned is that I too can go blank.

And to think I almost landed the bigger one (by only a few inches) about 45 mins later. Right to my feet, and off he went.

Actually hooked the same fish (pretty sure anyway) two and a half weeks later.

Yah, browns have to be my favorite invasive fish. Well, that and those pesky steelhead that keep coming back every year. :p
