Hello from Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, not enough spey casters around here to render an opinion on an appropriate line for new rod I'm building. 13'6" 8/9 wt. It may be too much rod for the Yough (we have some nice trout here, but no salmon), but I'm planning to build a switch rod next...

Guess I might have to take it on a trip.

Regards,
Brian

Brian, any chance you know the blank's grain window? What blank is it, maybe one of us has a factory built or custom in the same blank.

If you know the weight, etc. you can go to the Rio website and they have a comprehensive chart that covers most rods and makes recommendation for advanced and intermediate skill level. It's a place to start as they list only their own lines but talking to a shop will help compare if you aren't familiar with or don't prefer Rio lines.

Canoseb, That is a lot of rod for the Yough, or anything else in our general area(not to say that there are not some rivers where you could effectively use it...). Having said that, the Yough would be a great place to practice casting. I've become a fan of the Airflo Delta(mid belly, not long) multi tip lines for most of my two handed rods. I'm currently looking for a Decho 11'9" 4 wt spey rod to fish the Yough, as well as some of our other decent size streams. I was just on the Neshannock, and I couldn't help thinking how much I would enjoy swinging some small streamers or soft-hackle wets with a light two-hander. Tight lines!

Going to have to claim "Chemo brain" on this post (that & too late @ night). Was talking about one blank and typing about another - this one is a 13 foot 7/8 weight (dealer says it could pass for a 6wt also). Have emailed the dealer to ask about the "grain window". Will go lighter on the upcoming switch rod project. Whilst I'm rambling, do any of you folks have a source for those really sharp looking bronze/copper (I think they call it "Frosted Titanium") colored ALPS reel seats?

I am haunted by rod blanks...

you could buy a bunch of lines from big box retailers, return them in as new condition, and narrow it down to a couple that you like.

If you chose the wrong one, you can usually sell it for 75% of its price as long as its in good shape at sites like this.

If and when you are convinced of the right line, browse spey forums like this; notice all the lines that go on the market. Wow!

However, I would never do this with solo fly shops; its just rude. If you want to have a conversation with poppy at the red shed, he usually can have a chat; hear your situation, adn recommend a couple. And he's always doing "test" this and "sample trial" that. Like a great business should...and he is the real thing.

@stewart dee - they sell spey lines at your Walmart? We're lucky to find a WF5F or DT around here. One near Erie will carry some ice fishing gear in the winter.

@williamb - tried Batson - they are wholesale only

@speyday - i couldn't buy something , use it, and return it like that

thanks for the responses guys
