New Sage X rod

Has anyone cast the 590-4 X next to the Sage ONE 590-4 X??? impressions??? thanks!!

I have. I tend to balk at the latest gear. In this case the hype may be true. Incredibly light, great touch, accurate. I like the look too. I will put in my order this week.

Missed the second part. I was unimpressed by the One. I never owned the One as a result. I don't need a 5 wt but I do need the X.

Many are going to like the new 'X'.....the 'X' definetly has more feel. No I have not casted them side by side. I personally thought the 'One' was a bit stiff. However I have casted the X and the Bolt 691-4 side by side and I would favor the Bolt. For me the Bolt fit my casting style. The X requires a slower cast much like the Z-Axis. The Bolt was an impressive rod and reminiscent of the XP perhaps a tad stronger in shooting and carrying line in the air. Would need to evaluate further, but still a helluva caster. Xp definetly wins the cosmetic look, the duo-tone orange is a bit to look at. :eek:

Sage screwed up the 590 model of the One. It was at least a 5.5 weight and probably a 6. I own the 690 and love it. When I test cast the 590 I double checked that I had a 590 in my hand and not a 690. Since the 9' 5 is such an important rod configuration, my guess is that Sage probably nailed the X in that config. They also have the Radian and Zenith (and successors) as really excellent competitors.

Its called fast!!!! If a five can't outrun a six it is not fast. Gotcha ya though....691 Bolt is a sweet rod!

Actually the One 590 was not fast, it was stiff. Fast should refer to how quickly the taper goes from soft to stiff; tip to butt. The One wasn't particularly fast in that sense. But it was just too stiff overall to load with a 5wt or even 5.5 weight line.

Actually fast can be one of two things

It can mean that the rod tapers quickly
Or it can mean that the rod returns quickly to the straight position after flexing.

Most people use it to describe a rod that is stiff. Not technically accurate but with most rods accurate enough.

Not much of a chance I'll be buying one but would love to go cast them. Just hate the idea of taking up a shops time when I have no intention of buying

I just dropped 100 bucks on a Fenwick FF806. I love it, so light, smooth, and chucks like a champ...just sayin'

Fast should equal how fast you get your fly in target position/zone.......not sure all of today's fast rods accomplish this....but many can sure send a fly and the line zinging right through and beyond that zone :p

In all seriousness there are some sweet fast action rods out there. Was not quite able to get my feel with the X. I did enjoy the Bolt. There is a rod for everyone out there regardless if labeled ultra fast - fast - med fast- medium- or molasses.

I call that tip recovery. The Sage SP was considered a medium fast action rod based on its flex profile, but it had fast rip recovery, a lot to do with the overall taper and high tensile graphite used. Ditto with Loomis GLX Classic.

I just fished the X 591-4 for a day in MT and couldn't be happier: it cast short and long accurately and mended a WF5F old style Rio Grand (1/2 size heavy) beautifully in fast water and frog water. I never got a feel for my 591-4 One and am glad it is sold.

If anyone is interested, I'm selling a new, never fished 691-4 X with the factory tube, sock, and warranty card. $615 shipped to the lower 48. $600 if picked up in Bend, OR. Shipping to Canada, AK, and HI by arrangement.

If you look at the deflection charts relative to other rods, the 590 is a stiffer, notably in the tip. Not ONE stiff but definitely stiffer. Its a really light rod and I'm sure its casts well (I haven't cast it). In the end I'm pretty sure you can get equal or better performance tho out of some other rods that aren't as stiff.

I always thought of Sage rods as over priced & years ago when my local shop started selling them i asked what's the price for those rods in the 0wt's? No way was I going there! But when i was in Australia start of this year, i went to have a fish one morning with a dude & he said have a try of this, 8wt X with 4280 reel & Rio permit line! After the first cast i said [email protected]#k this is friendly & didn't want to give it back! It felt like a 7wt against my 8wt Hardy ProAxis-X, I loved it that much i ordered one & the reel when i got home! Still haven't tried a 7wt line on it yet? But i'm thinking the 5wt would also be a really nice rod too! Only one way to find out? See if you can test one somewhere!?!
