I've been a member of the Forum for a bit over a year. I started fishing the beaches and the folks on the Forum have given me great suggestions on how to find good fishing (never where and I don't ask). I started tying flies a couple of months ago and am amazed that I've actually caught fish on some of my creations. I have constructed versions of Chum Babies and Roger Stephens top water sand lance. I'm now trying to tie flat wing (?) pattern that I found in a photograph on the forum. I can't figure out who the original artist is so I can't give them due credit.

Here is my problem: I'm using RIO UV Knot Sealer to try to build heads on the flat wing pattern. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to build the material evenly on the hook. I'm also struggling with getting eyes (I'm using Spirit River molded eyes) to stay in place.

Karl, that one is in Kelvin's gallery so he is the likely fly tier. If not it looks a lot like a Kerfwappie epoxy head. Both do magical things with baitfish patterns and I'm glad to have a few flies from each of these guys in my saltwater box. Both are also super fishy guys that are as nice as any other you'll have the opportunity to meet. I bet if you send them a PM they'll share what they do.

I use a lot of the UV stuff. If your building up a large head its best to do it in several layers...

Just to add a couple of lines here - if your tying sub surface flies and you want to add some serious action. Look at a product called fly lipps. I've been tying some deciever type stuff and added fly lipps to some of them. The bite tells it all. I got say-60% more bites on the same colors WITH fly lips than the ones that did not have them. Also there's a tackle rep that I talked to via email the other day and they are tryng to make, what I can only call "molds" for these head building applications. He's sending me a dvd and a product demo kit. It's a head building material and the dye's, also the "mold". Gonna give it a shot and see how it turns out.

Andy, these are cool. Which have you used and how do they cast with the diving/wiggle lipps versus a standard fly. I have used some cones, shaped beads, sequins and even washers out front to make for a lot of weird action.

Casting can alittle trickier than normal but not any harder than flinging a big popper. I guess tthe only aggravating part is the landing can be a little wild -you kinda have to let em settle so you the "right" side up - BUT - I have fished em back upside down and the fish don't seem to notice..lol
