My father-in-law has his own private plane and just got his IFR so I talked him into heading to Alaska this July or August. My uncle-in-law pans for gold near the town of Central Alaska so this is where we will be camped. I guess Central is about 150 wiles east of Fairbanks Alaska. He says there is good greyling fishing 50 feet from camp but to hit the silvers, or any of the salmon you need to head down to Valdeez(sp)or other areas?? He does not flyfish and he thinks that trout dont exist anywhere near his area because its too cold for them :dunno ?? Does anyone have any insight for fly fishing around the town of Central or Fairbanks area of Alaska??

Also what kind/size of gear should I be packing in these areas??

My suggestion; look up the Alaska Flyfishers, the big Alaska FFF club, at:
www.akflyfishers.org
The server can be off sometimes. But hang in there. That bunch of folks knows a lot about Alaska fishing. One of them is sure to help you on their forum. Many of these members are military retirees and they have been all over Alaska during their service. So you may have some luck with that.Call in to Mountain View Sporting Goods in Anchorage too, they may have some help or references for you. Tony Weaver is very Alaska experienced and is in Anchorage, he's also listed on the FFF site: www.fedflyfishers.org, as a master casting instructor. He is also a really nice guy, and a guide up there.The Alaska Dept of Fish and Game loves to hear from people like you. You would be amazed at how helpful they are. All you have to do is call them. And they are on the web too.Calls work better in my experience.I would also try calling a few small businesses in the town/village near your fishing trip. Some people love to talk about local fishing. Hope these suggestions help you out.

My wife and I went on a typical tourist trip to Alaska last summer and I took only a 5wt with me. When ever we'd stop for the night there was usually a stream close by and greyling are very common in the alaska waters. A little mosquito dry was recommended to me and was productive. They weren't big fish 10-12 but fun. Don't forget to pack your 8wt as you may get a chance to fish salmon on your way to and from the Fairbanks area. Wherever you plan to spend the night in southeast alaska, there'll probably be a chance to wet your line in a local stream or sometimes right off the shore in the salt. The southeast alaskan silvers usually don't return to the freshwater until mid Aug and the kings come back early summer but a little searching the web should tell you what'll be running when you decide the timing of your trip. It's worth checking into it 'cause if you're there when the fish are returning, you'll never forget it. Roger(Topflight senior)

I'm grew up in Ketchikan but have relatives in Fairbanks, went to school there, and Grayling is the ticket in the interior. There are plenty of lakes that are stocked with Rainbow and I think some Browns. The upper Chena river is supposedly very good for hefty Grayling If you're heading out west to Circle there should be some good spots, though I've never been there, so ask around on the recommended sites, and there's at least 2 flyshops in Fbx. From my personal experience, for fabulous Grayling fishing--and I mean an average size of around 16-18 inches--drive southeast fromFairbanks to Delta, then straight east to the park next to the Clearwater river. There is a nightclub of sorts right on the river next to end of the park, and you can usually wade it there easily after spring runoff. I was there in early June and it was fine. Only problem I see is July/August can be very warm and that slows the mid-day bite. Mosquitos work well, as does a royal coachman, and I found orange stimulators were fine too, all in #14 and smaller. They are beautiful fish with peacock colors on the dorsal, not the spunk of a Bow but fun nontheless. In two separate trips there--less than 3 hours apiece--I caught at least 20-30 fish each time, none smaller than 15".

On other options, the grind to Valdez is a very long one, I'd just enjoy the interior Grayling fishing, it's unique and uncommonly good. Other options to consider are south near Talkeetna and near Denali, esp. in July/August when the Salmon are in...but so are the Grizzly. Just pay attention and take precautions and you won't become a snack.

Tight lines, you'll have a blast!
