It is good reading. James sent me an advance copy and his Old Man's life was tough. It is a real eye-opener in terms of many things, not just WWII, but institutional systems ranging from the orphanage he spent time in to the indentured placement of kids without parents on a farm. It is also interesting to read about someone who was obviously very bright, but was not afforded the kinds of schooling we take for granted, how is it that they teach themselves. James' dad took to reading a series called the little blue books, a popular pressing of major literary and scientific works. He spent time in the CCC prior to the war, that program helped shape up a generation of kids without prospect of employment, at least until the army took over in 1940's. A good read if you like history, social development and so on. And he was big into hunting and fishing though the author plays that down a little.
