Hey fine steelheaders,

I may be heading to Southern Oregon next week since my hunting plans fell through.

I fished the N. Umpqua last year and enjoyed it enough to do again for sure. I am unsure how bad it is up there after the fire. Are the campgrounds open?

I was also contemplating fishing the Rogue. Before digging into my gazetteer tonight, I was curious about access and how difficult it is for a novice. I understand that down low should be easier but is there any reasonable way to get into the wild and scenic section? Is it necessary? Thanks for any replies. I do take PM's too.

Not sure on access but I'd suggest swinging by Costco and grab a few a boxes of kleenex to wipe up those Red Sox induced tears.

Given the relative success that he Olde Towne Team has had since the birth of my 1st child (3 world series titles/ constant relevance), it is difficult for me to feel the pain of Red Sox losses like I once did. Dry tissues will not be needed. Like herpes, they will be back.

Given that I will be camping, I may stop and pick up some wet wipes from Costco. Wet wipes tend to help with many camping related sanitation issues. Thanks for the reminder!

I went down about a month ago and susan creek was open. The pullouts along the hwy were closed up high but they might be open by now. Even if they aren't, there is still tons of water to fish.

I wish I could help. I grew up on the Rogue. Caught my first steelhead out of it. That was about 55 years ago. I haven’t fished the Rogue in about 45 years and the last time I visited there most of the river where I fished is now privately owned.

Shamelessly begging? The guy is just asking for some general information on a river that's 500+ miles from home and he's not familiar with. Not like he's asking for specific honey holes.
As to "Hire a guide", not everyone has the resources to put out $4-600/day for a guide after lodging, meals gas, out of state license, etc. this time of year on that river most of the better guides are booked. If you're wanting to fish weekends good luck getting an opening.
I digress save to say rumor has it Charles has had a bit of success.

I appreciated the info I received via PM when I was headed to Yosemite earlier this year. High water made it a golfing instead of fishing vacation, bit the info was still appreciated.

Like Charles, I'm not someone who posts GPS coordinates or lots of pictures. Just appreciative of the members who reached out to help another WFFer on holiday.

Hope he did score - it's a great feeling to explore a new Steelhead fishery and find a player or two.

Not really

Although, having not paid any attention to broadcast news for over 15 years now, I'd guess it's desperately in need of someone with keen observational powers like mine, but the mere suggestion that an individual look at things from a perspective other than their own would be met with such derision that my career would be measured in minutes.

Anadromous fishing on the west coast was destroyed by a combination of a number of factors starting off with the arrival of European settlers and continuing with over harvest, habitat destruction, etc.

Sorry, but the North Umpqua has had just about every fishing hole and rock documented for quite some time now. "Information is out there...all you have to do it let it in."

As for access...they are numerous. At least, when they haven't been closed by fire activity.
