I know this is a Washington fly fishing site, but I fish all around the great northwest (as I'm sure others of you do). I thought I'd give the heads up that if anyone is going to renew your Oregon out of state license (there season is from Jan 1st through Dec 31st), it will cost you! Standard license is $106.25 plus $26.50 for a steelhead/salmon tag. Bummer for those of us who practice catch and release, still have to have the tag.

On the up side, last weekends trip to the Slietz was a blast. Two hatchery and one native plus a few cutties... and lots of rain.

Tight lines y'all!

Sounds steep. But Oregon is strapped for money. The sad thing is: "If you set prices too high you may lower your revenue rather than increase it. Several states have found that to be true. Increased prices often means less buying of licenses and often less revenue from out of state fisherman. I think they may have done that.

With all do respect, seems to be the opposite for the Skeena system. expensive, they complain, but still come.

Yes, heard about the 'fee structure' from a fellow I fish with from Kalifornia. But that's a yearly license, you can get daily/weekly for far less cost.Just a question of how often you'll actually fish in this State. That said, the number is just about twice that a Resident would pay; tain't cheap to live/fish here in Oregon ... unless you do a lot of it (to amortize the cost.

Most out of state licenses cost to much. Idaho is $98.plus change and Montana's is still $70. Well $60, plus a conservation license fee of $10.00. I paid the Montana fee when I first moved here. Now it is just $8.00 for the Conservation License. You get some perks when you turn old.

I believe that is an increase of $44.75 compared to last year! Damn them! That is outrageous. There goes more of my retirement income. Everyone just keeps chipping away every year. bawling: :beathead:

Hmmm? Wonder if that will have any effect on the rate of unlicensed (poaching) fishing? And I was thinking of moving back to Orey-gone too....sheeesh!

Skeena is just one system, we are referring to a whole state revenue, including gear fishing, etc. Next year at this time we'll know whether it was a wise decision or not. Skeena appeals to folks who have to travel long distances and make special lodging arrangements, etc and therefore I wouldn't think a selective system like the Skeena would be affected but the whole state of Oregon is a different thing. People going to B.C. and the Skeena System have a little cash to burn already or they wouldn't be there in the first place.

I agree Keith. I emailed ODFW about this very thing and the reponse I got was that they were doing it just to maintan operations as they have been and keep from closing hatcheries. I guess Economics 101 isn't a pre-req. for those on the decision making board but then again...I doubt it is required for any public office in Orygun. "Hey Ford and Chrysler, I have an idea! Instead of closing down plants and laying off workers lets just double the price of our cars! That will bring us enough revenue to stay on our feet!" Brilliant!

I also found it amusing that the email stated that officials took input from varoius meetings with groups of sportsmen and sought the public opinion before making the call. Again, a brilliant move. " Hey guys, by a show of hands should we raise license rates on our citizens or visitors to our state? Thought so..thanks for the input guys. "

Oh yeah...and it looks like someone came up with the idea to have tags and fees for canoes, kayaks and rafts too in case you want to fish out of them. (applies to any craft over ten feet) I heard next year there is a purposed float tube and wader tag in the works.
Guess I am ok for another year if I only fish out of my pram...it's only 7ft. (shh...don't tell ODFW they make boats that small)

And furthermore, the Oregon Fish & Wildlife site states,

"Attention anglers: Beginning Jan.1, 2010 you will need an Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Permit for non-motorized boats (drift boats, canoe, inflatable pontoon boat, etc.) that are 10 feet or longer. Permits are transferable to other non-motorized boats, but each boat on the water needs a permit. Permits go on sale Dec 1 wherever ODFW licenses are sold and online. For more information see the news release."

I wonder if I am going to need a permit to bring my own toilet paper.......

Wow, thats about what they charge in Alaska for a non-res license... Except the quality of the fishing up there is more than enough to justify it. Not sure that is the case in Oregon.
It is actually quite a bit more than AK gets... Non-resident full year license is $85 and if you want to keep a king salmon a $10 stamp is required. Looks like 28% plus more than AK...

Would closing hatcheries really be a bad thing?

Larry, on my recent family outing to Portland I was told that you can neither pump your own gas nor wipe your own ass. Some sort of union agreement about hazardous materials or something.

I too thought that a 'bit odd' even if I understood the 'why.' So you have a 'permit,' but unless someone's going to check your craft ..... who cares?

Well, Washington did their part by adding a Columbia River Salmon and Steelhead endorsement for 2010. "Why let Oregon have all the fun....hey guys we could cash in on this too." What chaps my ass is this: Every year more $$$ just to go fish. Every year less enforcemnt from WDFW and ODFW for catching poachers. More money from us..more hatcheries close down, More money from us...more boat ramps loose acsess. I cant even get the WDFW to answer the phone so I can ask questions about their salmon programs, which should be available to the public, seeing as its our money funding their programs. So, if the states department of fish and wildlife dosn't even want to return a phone call, (to which I have made many, and left many messages) then I am left to assume that the whole thing is corrupt, they are lining thier pockets with private interests & they dont care about the sportsmen and woman. Just another business. I have givin them many chances to change my mind and set me straight, and thay haven't made an effort to do so. What else can be done? I dont know what the answer is. If I knew where to start I would. Im joing a couple clubs that seem to be active in the state, and I will help in any way I can......JUST TO GO FISHING!
