A month ago I broke my Orvis 3 wt rod and while the details are not important I do want to report that Orvis did an unbelievable repair job on my rod. It was a custom layup that a few of my old fishing buddies back home had built so when I broke the but section I just assumed that they would replace the whole rod. But they went the extra mile. From what I can tell they completely built a new rod but used my custom reel seat. It is absolutely beautiful. The cork is new the guides are polished and I can't say thanks enough to those guys. They even sent me a rod tube for free, as I was afraid to send them my hand stitched leather tube. Best of all, I paid not one dime for the repair. Only the Swedish bikini team could top that. Good to know that they took such good care of you. If my 5 weight ever breaks I will expect the same service from them...not that I think it ever will, unless I land on it as I am falling into the river (won't be the first time).
By the way, I hear so many Orvis haters on this site ranting about how overpriced/undervalued their stuff is and I wonder where they get this crap...since all the other brands charge you the same arm and a leg for good quality stuff. Please, don't give me any stories about how a garbage Fred Meyer rod and reel combo is better than my Orvis setup because you saved so much money - do you really think Fred Meyer will do anything for you if it breaks? How about the manufacturer of the rod? They don't care if your stuff gets taken care of in a timely manner. I'm sure it will get fixed some day...hope you don't need it for about 12 months.
Bottom line Orvis Haters: Orvis is expensive...too expensive. But so are all the companies that sell gear to the flyfishing market. At least with Orvis you know you are getting customer service you can depend on, the same reason a lot of people insist on tires from Les Schwab. Let me be clear - I love the cheap rod/reel combos at Fred Meyer, Wal Mart, and GI Joes...but I don't ever expect the same quality and service.
Any don't have any misconceptions, my Orvis really is better than your Sage and will catch more quality fish. And I will look better casting. Hahahahahahah

I broke an Orvis rod that had the 25 year warranty while fishing on the So. Fork of the Boise River. Totally my fault but they didn't care, send it back and they would take care of it.
I had bought the rod from a fly shop that was having a sale (the rod retailed for about $275.00 and I got it for somewhere around $200.00). When I got the rod back from Orvis they had included a letter apologizing for no longer having the same rod I had sent in and they had replaced it with a rod that was in their catalogue retailing for about $425.00. They were concerned that I would be upset (like maybe the rod had some sentimental value) and they were sorry that they couldn't repair the other rod.
I was stoked that I got a much better rod. I was really impressed with their concern and it only cost me the shipping to send it back.
I now have 4 Orvis rods.

I have two of the Orvis Superfine outfits the 7 1/5 foot 4wt and the 8 1/2 foot 5wt. Both with the Battenkill Disc reels. I love fishing with these rods. However, I used to have a 9' 5wt Sage that was also quite a joy to cast, but the ex took that one with her when she moved out.

Orvis products have come a long way in the past few years, and performance-wise, their stuff performs as well as Sage, Loomis, etc.
Until they improved their equipment, I would have agreed the products were over-priced. But now, they are priced similarly to the other premium products, and perform just as well. So, in opinion, relative to the market, they are not overpriced, contrary to what some folks have posted.
In fact, their Battenkill large arbor reels are a great value relative to the other large arbor reels out there. Very good quality, good drag, competitive prices relative to the other machined reels, and the great Orvis service - going down the checklist of things you want in reel, it has it all!
I have other high-end premium fly fishing products that I use, but Orvis stuff is great (now), and the company is tops for customer service (almost too good, from a business-persons standpoint).

The original Orvis warranty program is what forced all of the major rod makers to get on board with the warranty programs we have today.It put a few people out of business along the way, but the rest of them really had to get it together to stay in business and make a profit and provide competitive service too. Orvis has the oldest continuously running rodshop in the country.
