Just back from my annual trip to AK. I lived there for 26 years and now have 2 sons and 3 granddaughters living in Wasilla. This gives me a good excuse to visit. I have been fishing the streams north of Wasilla for years. There are about 10 anadromous streams crossed by the Parks Highway between Wasilla and Denali State Park(a distance of about 150 mi). All are accessible from the road system. The fishing varies depending on water levels and salmon runs. I mostly fish for rainbow trout which are most dependent on the king and chum salmon runs. The more king or chum salmon the more trout. By far, the most effective way to fish is with beads or flesh flies. I fished about 15 days and hit most of the streams. I had particularly good success on three streams where I found spawning chums. There were about 5 days I couldn't fish due to high water. Overall, it was a good year.

Nice report. I need to go north more than I do. I usually go south to the Kenai Peninsula. I had some great days up north this summer and saw very few people. All the streams north and south are blown out now.

Did you try fishing any of the lakes around there?
I didn't fish any of the lakes this year but have done so in the past. I,ve been considering buying a float tube and leaving it with my son so I can fish the lakes when streams are blown out. Many of the lakes are stocked and some have natural reproduction. With a few exceptions, most of the lakes are under fished. I've seen or heard of trout up to 30" in some of the lakes. Dragging a leech or damsel/dragon fly imitation works well.

Nice report. What weight rod do you use for those big bows?
I use a 6 wt. A 5 would also work but I'm more comfortable with the 6. I use 2 rods in AK and went with the 6 for trout and 8 for salmon, but a 5,7 combo would also work. I lost a number of large trout in one stream because I couldn't move them and eventually pulled the hook out of their mouth.

Ya I have a customer Bob who fishes the lakes on a regular basis and he catches some hawgs.
