The Quinault tribal fisherman are netting Sunday through Friday on the Queets, Humptulips and the Chehalis to the end of April. The Hump and the Chehalis tribs are closed for sport fishing on March 31st. Could someone please explain to me how this sound management policy in the age of declining runs? On a side note there was an emergency closure of all Chehalis tribs last year due to low returns. I am not here to bash tribal netting but six days a week all every week till May 1 is a bit much.

You should go and watch! The nets will be staggered and free floating, no room for escapement. God help the fish and everything that will drown amongst the nets.

SR,

Tribal fishery managers frequently have a lower threshold for escapement and conservation than recreational anglers. Their managment strategy is to allow that escapement that provides the maximum harvest, not the maximum fish population size. The management policy could easily be defended as sound based on their management intentions. Reasonable people have been known to disagree about this, once, or twice, or ten thousand times. Welcome to the fray.

Despite the apparent intensive gillnetting seasons, the Queets continues to be fairly well escaped; the Humptulips and Chehalis not so much in recent season, altho previously they too were.

I can't think of any reason NOT to bash tribal netting. Those guys have a right to make a living, but: Non selective harvest, aka gillnetting must stop. If all wild reproduction is destroyed, what's left are hatchery programs, which puts every drainage one virus away from extinction.

Bash away.

That's not quite true.... Here's the statement from the WDFW...

Tribal netting will begin at 12 noon Sundays and end at 12 noon Friday of each week, through Friday Feb. 26. Then netting will begin at 12 noon Mondays and end at 12 noon Friday, through April 2. Netting will begin at 12 noon on Mondays and end at 12 noon on Thursdays through the remainder of the season.

It is a small difference, but enough of one to point out....

BTW, when making these arguments, experience pretty much taught me that being very precise and concise on the point is a requirement. Sloppiness on this stuff is what usually causes all sorts of thread masterbation that usually isn't all the productive.
