I'm consistently amazed with the versatility of this line. Moreover, I don't consider it just a jack-of-all/master-of-none product. It might just be the marrying of this line to my rod; IMO the SageX 7130 does not excel at sustained anchor casts and really shines with splash and go. With a 520gr Rage I'm able to throw single speys effortlessly tossing 10' of t-11 and a barbell intruder type fly.

At this point in time the Rage is my goto 'if I could only have one shooting head' line. What's yours?

Agree on the Rage. And it's not just a summer/fall line. I keep a rod lined up with a Rage and light tips during the winter for soft water where a skagit with T/whatever is sitting on the bottom.

If I had to replace it, a NextCast Zone F1 is my other favorite line for catching steelhead.

If I could only choose one line for any of my non-trout spey rods, it would be a Nextcast Steelhead finder of the correct weight for the rods. For the 3-4, and 5 wt. rods I would go with my Rio Scandi body and appropriate tip or for heavy steamers, a straight piece of 12 lb. Seaguar trout steelhead fluoro-carbon line.

If you ever get the bug to try something new, try the new SA Scandi lite. It's my go to now for rods under 12 ft.

I have the same rod but only toss a skagit with it. Not sure how it would fare with a 28ft long rage head.

I would definitely look at the SA Scandi lite it's built like a Rage but with a shorter head for today's short sticks. I cut mine so I can run mono and not the intergrated running line. They are wicked lines and my new favorite to show off on our Loomis sticks at events.

Sounds very intriguing. What is the upper limit for tips and weighted flies when using a 230 grain SA scandi, in your opinion?

I own an Echo SR 81010 and it jacks a Rage 480 a good distance. Good pairing for the 8 wt. Pretty sure the 7 wt. would also cast a Rage well.

What about Rage Compact? I am running Switch Float 390 grain ("based loosely on Rage Compact") on my Hardy Switch. It is very nice at 26 feet. I wouldn't want to go longer than that.

The Rage is a very versatile line. It will throw poly leaders like no ones business all the way up to 7inch per second. Line taper also allows to use tips to T-11 and even T-14 with moderate size flies. Fish it.
