I own a couple of click and pawl reels and have had trouble over the years with worn dogs and gears. Maintenance is something I practice with all my equipment but is there something like greasing the dogs more often that will relieve the wear? Is this just the nature of the game because it seems like my equipment should last a little longer, thanks.
Interesting, may we ask what (brand) of reels your having problems with. Vis a vis sending out the reel for repairs (sometimes that's the only solution) this fellow is the best of the best.
Tibor---- BUT these guys are excellent customer service and shipped parts asap. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a quality down in the trenches working hard reel. After some discussion with other fisherman this is common with hard work on the river.
I can't relate to the problem you describe. My oldest spring and pawl reel is a Hardy Princess that is going on 40 years old. The pawl has undoubtedly worn, but I don't notice it. I just put a little reel grease on it once in a while.
There's always a tradeoff between tradition and technology, depending on what you favor. If you want really bulletproof reels that require minimal upkeep, then go for the sealed drag systems from Nautilus and many others. For me I favor the latter.
