Does any one know what material they use as to if it may be compatable with any of the T stuff ?
In other words, for example sake , is a type 8 rio tip the same as tying up a 15' chunk of t-11 or so ?
Anyone know the basic conversions ?

Yes. You can buy small kits of sink tip material. Cortland sells a mini sink tip kit that can be had in several densities. I think you get 30' or so.
http://www.google.com/search?q=Cort...ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7GCNV_en Just one option.
R. B. Meiser also has some Zinc impregnated tips that he sells as made tips, sets or small spools to make your own. I think that material is weldable too. Google his site.

This is what I was after, so t-8 should be comparable to a type 6 . Next step, the grain scale for confirmation... Thanks Spence ! :)

A grain scale will confirm weight not density. For the T-material T-8 is eight grains per foot. T-11 is 11 grains per foot. And so on. Rio tips are also labled by weight so...Weight/#of feet=grains per foot. No scale necessary. You could do density comparisions with a weight to volume comparison. But aren't the rio tips density compensated? So not quite the same as T tips.

Standard tips are tapered. The density compensated ones have additional powered metal added to the coating as you approach the tip, so that it sinks as fast or slightly faster than the rest of the tip. The T material typically has a mono core and uniform diameter and density along the length.

So a density compesated tip or Rio tip 15' type 8 will sink that 1 to 2 seconds faster than a 15' T-8 because of the heavier coating in the tip. Am I gettin this right DocDoc and do you know anything about the tips that are slow or medium or fast sinking or superfast sinking because I am curious of those grain weights comparted to rio to T material also Lost Creek Fly shop ( http://www.lostcreekflies.com/PolicyShipping.php) sells bulk sink tip in T material for good price and if you go in he has taught me how to tie them up the right way aswell

It's not that it sinks faster, it's that it will more likely sink uniformly. With the higher density of the tip, it will generally got down tip first. In a lot of cases with tips, when they sink, there will be a belly formed in the middle due to the fact that one side is connected to the floating line and the other side is connected to the fly. As for the grain weights, for Rio tips they are provided on the web site. As an example the 10wt tips weigh 150 grains or so, and are 10 grains a foot.
