Went to the link. They say "original aesthetics in the octagon shape." The exterior shape was an octagon but that's a copy of the post-1998 Gunnison reel. I've never been a fan of that style. I much prefer the "original" style with the larger and fewer holes on the back and the matt finish. The price is up, naturally. I bought my first for $134 if I'm not mistaken but that was in 1991.:)

Thanks for posting this Bruce.
I like Ross Reels and own a number of them, though they are all older models. The newest ones I own are Big Games.
I just haven't been very excited about any of their newer offerings for awhile now.
As far as Gunnisons go, I much prefer the look of the older model.

The Ross Canyon 4 (bought in 2002-3 I think) is the only reel I regret selling. That was a great reel.

They had two versions of the Canyon Reels if I remember correctly. The first versions were "Canyons" and came in sizes 1-3. I have a 2 and three 3's.
They discontinued those and came out with the "Canyon Big Game" which was available in sizes 4-8.
I have a 4,5,6 and 7 in those.

Yeah they are great reels! I had the Canyon BG4. In gold...oowwww. Paired it up with a 10'' 8wt XP. Fished that thing almost everyday for 4 months straight. Never cleaned it really, just dropped it in the river on occasion. Never had a failure once. Kings, Coho, Sockeye, massive rainbows and Dollys. That thing was a wench and had a super smooth drag. Similar to an Abel reel, when you pick up a Canyon/bg you can feel the quality.

@Stonefish - Whatcha targeting with the BG7??!! Sturgeon? Lings? Orcas?

I googled new Ross reels for 2018 and came across a posting from the Fly Waters Outdoors website. The new Gunnison will supposedly be making its debut this April

They did this once before as a "limited edition". I called Ross and asked if the spools for the old Gunnison will fit the new one.
At that time they said no and as the majority of my spools fit the old Gunnison a new one that wasn't really the original does me no good.

I generally liked Ross Reels of yesterday and have a bunch of Gunnisons, Colorados, CLAs and recently bought a San Miguel. When I heard them coming out with a new Gunnison a few years ago, I was excited but never got any. Then the novelty wore off. Now hearing about a new model, I feel they seem to be trying to do too much. When they start making spools incompatible with the old versions and changing the looks, then to me it is not a Gunnison...too many different versions, looks, and specs.

I used to have quite a few more Ross reels but have sold a lot off because they just didn't get used that much. I still have a CLA4, Momentum 6 and 8. And I have two BG6 reels with extra spools. I guess if you add that up with the nine Gunnison reels, I still have quite a few.:p The workmanship and durability of all those reels is outstanding and they look good on the rod, as well.

Two screws...one head popped in assembly.
We need a "quality" intervention...
Unless they were intentionally showing what it looks like with screw in and screw out. However, none of the Gunnison reels I own have screws on the back of the reel and neither does my Nautilus. As I stated in my previous post, I can't recall seeing any fly reel with screws on the back of the reel. Would you have any idea what purpose the screws serve on the new Gunnison?
