I bought one of these reels and sent it back as a blemish due to two gouges painted over on the reel frame. Replacement reel has same defects. Is that just how these reels are? Really like the reel otherwise although have yet to put backing on it.

Well called Sage and they said that's just how they make them. Rather visible in assembled form too.

Huh. Odd looking marks. Sure seems like a goofy thing to not clean up somehow.

The story from Sage as I understood it is that there are drag set screws behind those marks. The heads of the screws are filled with black caulk so only the factory messes with those. Maybe the fugliness lead to their discontinuation?
