Looking at some retirement, part-time property to spend May-September in about 3 years. Appears to be a nice area and was wondering if anyone can give me the pro/con of the area. Fishing & rafting a must, others of lesser importance.
Thanks,
R

Never skied up there but the hill and snow look good. Not positive but i'd guess the property tax is Les less than WA due to ID income tax. We only rented in WA so no frame of reference. it probably balances out to about the same overall.

Salmon the town has Salmon the river, of course; but in our time it may not be a great steelhead/salmon stream any more. You could raft from there downstream, across Idaho. But then how do you get your gear back home? (Hint: the Salmon is "the River of No Return"). There are many mountain lakes and streams nearby - but if you're retiring, how much mountain hiking do you feel like doing, and for how long?

I'd look across the state and north, to Lewiston, or nearby towns along the Snake and Clearwater, and the Grand Ronde. A lot more good stream fishing.

Thanks for the info. Not so interested in Steelhead or Salmon, I get my fix on the NorCal streams October-March for them. I'm more interested in trout and a place to get out of the Central California heat May-September. 8 months a year is nice here, summer is Africa hot. Looks like it's gotta have some good trout fishing nearby, Frank Curch Wilderness, Middle Fork Salmon, and it's a lot closer to Dillon & Twin Bridges than I am now.

Don't come to Dillon as you probably wouldn't like it. The only lakes near Dillon are the Reservoir's and they are to big for a float tube. And about the only other lakes are the ones that sit at 8500'. And they are iced up until July.

I was waiting for you to jump in; locked the door behind you? I've heard the stream fishing there sucks as well.

Robert- I was just in the town of Salmon yesterday after a 5 day float on the MF Salmon. According to the locals, the main stem is good for Salmon and Steelhead but not that great for resident trout. As we drove from the confluence near Shoup toward Salmon there were many nice sized feeder streams which may or may not fish well. The MF Salmon fishes great, but access is limited to some backcountry airstrips or a long hike. Pros - 55 minutes to Boise on Salmon Air of McCall Air for about $200. Close to MT so you can avoid sales taxes. Cons - may have to go to Boise or ID Falls for many services and if you don't want to fly, it's a long drive.
