Ok! Let's do it. Here are the participants I got from the responses - if I missed anyone please speak up.

So, each of us ties 12 flies. Mail them to me for distribution to the others - include your mailing address and $1 for postage if you can.

I know, here is the first one saying (s)he is going to be late with their flies...I know...I committed and now can't perform. I am still in the swap, I have six down, six more to go, and I should be done by tomorrow (if I get more of my material by then).
To make this threat something more than just a lousy excuse for my lack of organization I want to bring this up:

This experience (the fly swap) has been very interesting. I usually never tie more than three flies in a row using the exact same pattern and the exact same colors. I usually get bored after two flies, and then tie up something else (ADD ?).Now I have been tying six flies, and by tommorrow it will be 12 flies of the exact same colors, material, and pattern (for the most part). I don't think I will ever stock my fly boxes that way, but it sure makes a nice little army on my desk.

How do other people stock their fly boxes ? Like me tie 50 million different patterns, stuff them into the box until it looks like a hippy sweater torn-up and stuffed into a box. Or do you tie only 3-5 useful patterns/colors and have a whole bunch of them ?
Just wondering.

I thought the same thing as last night! - they sure look pretty all in a pile. But it was more production than I like to do typcially. 2 nights full (1 night of epoxy'ing)

I'm sure you won't be the first to be behind with summer etc - so I would not worry.

I do the same as you - I will do a pattern but vary the colors so I might end up with 12 flies in the end, but no more than 3 of each color, size etc.

I love a stuffed fly box and I carry flies I will probably never use, but they are known to be successful. It's the boy scout in me coming out...worst thing is to be fishing and not have the right fly.

I am finding the same thing is the other swap. I do not tie alot of dry flies since most of my fishing is below the surface anyways. I mostly tie just 2 or maybe 3 of the same pattern then work on something diffrent. I now have to give credit to those who tie up the patterns sold in stores and fly shops. It must get boring making the same pattern with the same fur and feathers and same size hook time after time with no changes. I like to make each fly just alittle diffrent to give myself more choich to match the hatch and by it being alittle diffrent then the store bought ones I feel the fish will not have seen anything like before and be more apt to take as a natural or be intrested in it. Of course that is just a feeling I have. I guess I to would be more of a free form person while at the vise.

I find the same thing that you guys are talking about. I haven't been tying flies too long, but I don't usually tie up too many of the same kind. I find myself either changing to another pattern or just modifying the pattern that I'm working on.

I'm going to try and get them in the mail by Friday, but I'm not sure I'll be able to make it or not. If not they'll go out by the middle of next week at the latest, since I'll be out of town over the weekend.

Anyway I'm looking forword to seeing what you guys are tying up!

Hey.

If other people are going to be late, I need to know when everybody else is finally done so I can be the last one to get my flies in. I suppose I should have warned you about my typical MO. I'm an experienced tier, and I like to flatter myself that I'm pretty good, but I'm pretty lazy and an inveterate procrastinator. When fishing, I'm always dead tired from being up late tying the night before.

Don't worry SC; I'm only halfway serious. They're coming (small yak-hair candlefish). Likely not by the 26th, but hopefully soon after.;-)

Just finished - will get them in the mail tomorrow AM, so there's at least a possibility that they'll be to you on time, they don't have to go far.

A dozen functional clousers. Not award winning, probably, but hopefully crowd-pleasing, or at very least fish-pleasing.

Mickyfinnrainbowshiner is a tough fly to tie for me. I am hammered with things to do right now. I definately won't have mine in by the 26th. Sorry fellas. not enough time to procrastinate. So either you let me send them late or I bow out.

dont bow out man, we's gonna be late also I'm way busy and have to bring my 4 year old son to the the job site with me because hes got chicken pox so I have got about 10 tied and will keep a strait head and tie the rest and epoxy some tonight. and the rest tomorrow night. and can mail them out friday,

I second that vote, gotta have 1 of those mickeyfinnshiners

I don't know if I'm the last holdout or not, but I'm looking at 12 pretty (albeit blind) little yak-hair candlefish on my tying bench here. I'll be applying eyes and epoxy this weekend and should have them in the mail no later than Mon.

My tying bench is in the attic, and with this hot weather the last few days I can't spend much time up there except in the early mornings and very late evening, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! Looking at the little buggers has me pretty jazzed for the coho to start showing, by the way.

Really sorry bout that guys, I had been planning on sending the flies before I left for vacation but I didnt here any details, so i was going to wait till i got back- I will still tie them up if it is not too late, otherwise- sorry, reply to this or email me to let me know.

I'm not planning to mail them out until Monday or Tues (latest) due the the long weekend - so if you want to get them to me in the mail Saturday I'll be able to include them - if not no worries - just let mw know if I should expect them.
