SBNRFR - A rant about goodbyes and getting screwed

Sorta, but not really, fishing related...Bear with me here as I do a little healing.

The day after Christmas my 3.5 yr. old GSP Karl was acting a little funny. Took him to the vet to find he is aenemic to the point of being near death, and we immediately have to transfuse him with 3 units of packed red cells. Turns out its an acute luekemia, and my poor ol pup died only a few days later, on New Years. I guess I know why he stopped hunting a month ago. I'm sure I cussed him for it, and now I feel bad. I sure do miss the ol dog. bawling:

But I tell you that story, so I can tell you this one: I had found a fella selling a raft and fishing frame over in Missoula through craigslist. I traded dozens of emails with this guy, and we reached a firm agreement on price, and for me to come pick up the boat and make the sale on the Sunday after Christmas. I contacted him when Karl got sick, and asked if we could postpone. I explained the whole situation. He said, sure, no problem, and I kept him up to date as the week progressed, and ol Karl finally took his last breath. After a couple days, I contacted him again to make arrangements to come over and get the boat. The guy tells me that since he's had time to think about it now, he's decided he won't sell it to me. I think that's BS - and considering the circumstances, of which he was fully aware, I think its downright heartless.

So if you see a 2008 tan 14' Sotar with yellow d-ring patches and a fishing frame this year - tell the guy he is a bigtime douche.

Sorry about your dog. Maybe the guy putting the thing up for sale knew it was a piece of crap and thought you were a nice guy, as demonstrated by the care you displayed towards your dog. And rather than have you thinking he was a douche while you stared at an unworkable tan 14' Sotar with yellow d-ring patches and a fishing frame in your back yard, he called the deal off.

Craigslist sales blow. I tried to give away a kids toy called the "Smartcycle" last week. Lots of people contacted me. one said he would pick it up and never showed. The second to respond emailed multiple times to pick it up and never showed. The third person showed right away and took it. All in all I would have spent less time and effort for the same goal by putting the thing out front of my house with a free sign on it.

Very sorry to hear about your pup. That is tough stuff.

However, it's a good chance for me to mention a group that is near and dear to my heart. The Northwest Veterinary Blood Bank

http://www.northwestbloodbank.com/

They are just what you think, a blood bank for dogs and cats. As BothWaters shows with his post, pets need blood transfusions during health crises (sp?) just like humans. My dog has been a donor there since we moved to Bellingham. Admittedly, we are lucky and live just a block away from the vet, so donating is easy for us. But still, it gives me a warm feeling to think that old Griffen (and to be fair, one of our horrible cats donates as well) might have saved the live of another loved pet or two.

I encourage everyone who lives near a pet blood bank to consider getting their animal tested and start donating. You and your animal buddy could very well be a godsend for someone and their pet in an emergency.

damn, seems like the huntin dogs are knockin off lately. Sorry the hear about your buddy Bothwaters.

I wouldn't go as far as to call the guy a douche bag, maybe he had a change of mind for a good reason. I've back out of buying things before and I'm pretty sure i have done the same when selling something, either because i didnt realize what i was doing or the decision to buy or sell something was more of a moment of impulse. You are right that he should'nt have posted it for sale if he didnt have full intent on doing so, no matter what though, your better off just letting it go.

maybe he had a good buddy that loved fishing out of that boat, but that buddy had passed away, and after hearing about your dog passing, he might of had seconds thought on selling it. just a thought, but we never know, so its best just to let small things slide and not carry them on our shoulders god knows we have alot of shit as it is on our shoulders in this world.

have a good one!

post up a pic of your buddy if you have one.

Hey... just thought i'd ask what kind of food you were feeding your dog?

I had a Collie die on me a year and a half ago due to some type of quickly invasive cancer. The vet said that he's seen more cancer in animals during the last three years than ever before. He said he's literally been blown away by the spike in deaths from cancer. He told me that he firmly believes that this is because a lot of dog food is being made in china with melamine or other nasty additives slugged in. Since he noticed the problem, he recommends everyone with a medium and up size dog to feed raw chicken or some other type of home made dog food.

Just thought I'd check in with you. I'm sorry for your loss man. I know it hurts when a dog that's become a companion suddenly isn't there. I hope I'm not sidetracking the issue, but it's been on my heart for a while because of my dog and I just want to make sure no one else has the same problem.

Sorry to hear of your loss.
I too lost one of the golden gang just before Christmas. Ole boy died of old ago.
I don't normally tell people what to do but this time. You just need to get over the boat, it's just a boat.
Also you need to get another pup and start a relationship that will last a life time.
Thanks for your heartfelt words guys. I appreciate it. It was, and still is real tough. And perhaps I shouldn't have mixed the two topics in the post, because obviously the boat is of little importance compared to my dog. I think the emotions of the one maybe just got displaced onto the other as an outlet due to the two things happening at the same time. I dunno. Regardless, after a little venting, the boat is forgotten about. Ol Karl though, never will be.

And the note about the pet blood bank Josh- thanks for mentioning that. It was a lifesaver for Karl, at least for a little while, and gave us an opportunity to at least know what was going on and if we could address it, then spend a few last days with him. Please donate if your pup can - our next one sure will. We're already talking to some folks about GWP litters.

Gary, sorry to hear bout your pal, too. Same with your Collie, Jesse. We fed Karl Iams.

Anyway, thanks again everyone. I will post a pic of ol Karl when I get a chance.

Funny, my vet has mentiond the same thing to me. I've been thinking of switching mine over to something like this.http://www.barfworld.com/html/barf_diet/barfdiet_specific.shtml

i don't think just raw chicken would work since they are scavengers from a dietary standpoint. Scary part is, it's not just dogs we're poisoning with chinese imported food. Major US (human) food producing corporations are using chinese resources as well.
Sorry to hear about your Dog,never heard of a blood bank for dogs. great idea.

Way to go Josh, That is one of the very best ideas I have ever heard on WFF. Thanks for putting it out there for us all to read. and thanks for donating blood.
BothWaters sorry to hear of the loss of your dog. I went thru it two months ago and it hurts BIGTIME.

Bill Dodd.
Very sorry to hear about the loss of not just your dog but also your hunting partner. I'll bet you've covered many many miles, the two of you. You also picked a great Dutch name for him.

Couple Pics of ol Karl. Thanks again, everyone.
I'm very sorry about your loss. We have two goldens that are getting on in years and I dread what is coming alltogether too soon. We do get the great memories and that is of some comfort.

As for the ASSWIPE, I hope someone pays him with a bogus check or counterfit bills !!

Take care.
Sorry about your dog. They can be friends for life. When I went into the service many years ago I left behind a mutt. We went every place together. When I left he got hit by a car and died.

But not to sound to stupid, what does GSP mean. Never mind, I just had a brain fart. German Shorthair Pointer. Since I'm older my brain works slowly.

Jim
Bothwaters, damn fine looking dog! im sorry to hear about the loss. i've always wanted a GSP.

As for the raft guy if i ever see him i'll tell him he's a douch and flip his raft over.
Being a LVT if I could have, I would have donated my dogs blood for you if needed! although the packed rbcs are what he needed! It sucks that people meet a verbal agreement and they can go back on it. leukemia is a very hard thing to go through!

I am sorry for you loss!
barf diet is not a very good diet! BE VERY CAREFUL with that stuff you can even endanger your pets life feeding that stuff! There is NO proof that feeding a raw diet can have any benefits!

A good dog food will have antioxidants that will help eliminate free radicals from the body! thus reducing the cancer producing problems. Any hard working dogs should also be on glucosamine and chondroitin-----> hunters!(helps lube the joints!) also on another note ANY large breed dog should be on that too!

Cool thanks for the heads up. Do you know of any good "roll your own" dog food recipes out there? I don't mind having to put the work in to make it myself. I'd just prefer to make sure quality stuff is going into it. I had to do the same with my Iguana. Also had to do it whe I bred african/sa chiclids. It drastically improved their overall health. Especially in the iguanas. Comercial iguana food = MBD or kidney failure in 2- 3 years guarenteed. Some of the stuff I've been reading about food coming out of china is damn scarey.
