Holy sh-t, that's gonna leave a mark.
Sad but true, "Safety First" was over looked.
Really sorry to see a new hunter hurt like that.

Haven't held a firearm (of any kind) in close to 25-30 years (and no desire to do so again), but RULE ONE: Always pull the bolt and confirm the barrel is/was clear.

RULE TWO? Go back and review RULE ONE.
I don't imagine he'll make that mistake twice.

Use the bore-sighter at HOME, then leave it there. Zero at the range. Return home & bore-sight again for reference if so desired. Always worked for me. I spend a lot of time at the range. Unfortunate, but could have been much worse. Guns, power tools, fishing, hunting, driving, etc . . . be aware of your surroundings & circumstances . . . adopt and maintain good habits.
