"The PM thing" refers to the "personal Message function available to you on this site. Just click on the name of the person you want to email and then click on "write a personal message". That should kep personal messages from cloging the highways here, while still providing ample room for discussions of topics related to flyfishing in general.

Isn't the Sauk and Skagit SUPER high right now? I haven't heard of anyone catching fish besides Dennis Dickson. I've been to the Sauk 6 times on foot with no luck...

Well I got back a little while ago. The Sauk is running pretty clear, and the Skagit looked good, but is starting to get really clear too. I fished all afternoon on the Skagit below the Sauk, and didn't have a take the entire time. This makes four months and no steelhead for me in Washington, I love steelhead fishing!! From what I hear, this week has been really slow, and with the weekend crowds I witnessed last saturday, I don't think I will be fishing the Skagit or Sauk without a change in water clarity any time soon.

Hiya crump- about the moderated post above: Just wondering if I saw your rig up there today below hippy. Hit me with a "PM"

SkyCries- neither is super high. In fact snow line was really low last night. Dams are dumping some water but nothing real high.

We drifted the Sauk on Wed. The water was very low and very clear (too clear). Saw lots of redds but very little fish. Out of 3 of us, one big dolly\bull to about 4 or 5lbs, a few whitefish, and one BIG buck steelie taken out of a very fast and deep run along a log jam (but he was getting pretty dark). I'd say that unless a late run of fresh fish pumps in, this river is about over until the summer run unless you like picking off dark fish off the redds. Which reminds me - talked to a few folks who were expressing some frustration over the many fly fishers they saw over the weekend wading on top of the reds and fishing through them. If you don't know how to spot a redd or know how to identifyy likely spawning areas - ask around. One thing for sure, the shallow tailouts that are great spots early in the season for catching fresh fish on the move are now covered in redds and should be left alone in my opinion.

If one knows the ins and outs of the classic wet fly swing and where the productive water is. One would never step on a redd. I would say anybody that is stepping on redds is an inexperienced steelheader at best and at worst a complete idiot.

Well I'm sure there are plenty of both out there. Looking down on them or name calling probably won't change that fact (and not everyone relies soley on the classic wet fly swing). Some folks just need a little education to realize that just fly fishing with single barbless hooks and C&Ring correctly are not always enough - there are easier and bigger ways to harm (even unintentionally)the native runs and a little experience and knowledge passed along from others can help out...

I hear the complaints every year of people walking on redds. There is no excuse for walking on redds. Perhaps if we call it what it is, ignorance, stupidity, what ever, then maybe it will stop happening as much. It might be time to quit being so damn nice and tell people they are screwing up.
