Some Interesting Thoughts To Ponder

On another thread I started, FA made the comment that textured lines may spook fish when stripping streamers. While trying to research that I ran across this article by Ralph Cutter and found it interesting.

Whether you agree or disagree it's definitely some food for thought.

An outstanding article! Worthy of consideration.
The opening line ("repeat a lie") is a great tip on its own as well. Waaaay too often I see the same thoughts regurgitated over and over until it becomes gospel. I could cite a few, but the thread might go political, and that would be a mistake. This topic is great as is.
Thanks
Given the tremendous amount of R&D put into line, leader, and tippet - by actual scientists....

You know where I'm going with this.

Yup, that's some fun stuff to ponder and debate all right. #3 is of particular interest and, I suspect as many of these are, highly dependent on the specific stream.
If you get out and fish enough you will have enough to ponder all by yourself....the one that gets me is.......
"Why is it the more I fish the more I lie?"
I think as humans we tend to over think things. I think certain flies produce triggers when fished in certain ways. Those that keep the flies fishing this way, and put them in front of the most fish and the biggest fish at the right time get the best results...

Whoa there, I'm still stuck on your flat brim comment on my other thread.:)

Don't agree with all of that, especially the part about eyes but good article and food for thought for sure.

Too much cogitating to suit this old boy. Other than judging whether or not I can reach a desired spot with what passes for my casting ability nowadays & selecting which pattern looks like a potential winner, I fish to relax & get away from "thinking."

If I was to have to put work into fly fishing, I wouldn't waste my time doing it. I go out to have fun and get way from the madding crowds. I always got my fly to go where I wanted it to with one or two false casts. And that's with a 3wt.

How many products over the years have had millions of dollars in "research and development" put into them, and been complete failures due to a simple oversight?

Can't assume anything.
