Southern California Mole Crab?

1006 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  mrbiggs
I'm heading to San Diego this weekend and I'm hoping to get some surf casting in while I'm there. I've never fished So-Cal before, but one of the prey species I keep seeing in my research is called a mole crab. I did some experimenting on the vise tonight, but I'm not sure if I like the result (see photo below). Has anyone here ever tied a mole crab pattern? Any tips would be appreciated.

I also have a handful of chartreuse clousers and orange "Surf Rats" tied, so I probably have enough of my bases covered for the weekend. This post is more out of curiosity. I have a tendency to become slightly obsessive when trying to figure out a new pattern (even if it's only going to be used for a single weekend).

Thanks in advance. If anyone likes the mole crab I put together, I can type up some instructions. Just let me know.

Thanks! I'll let you know how it fishes. I can type up a step by step when I get home.
Orange clousers to imitate pelagic crabs.
Those look great. I used to try to tie deer/bucktail shells, but I switched over to the Paul Cronin's Surfin' Merkin in pink for sightfishing corbina in the SoCal surf. It's great. Here are a couple of videos. The pink is especially good for visibility.
