What flies do you prefer folks, when you speyfish for salmon and/ or steelhead on the surface and just below?
Patterns name, recipes?
Thnaks in advance
Since you are right in the middle of summer, i'd suggest tying a steelhead bee Roderick Haig-brown style.
Bulk it up good or add floatant to it, then let it skim across the surface on your favorite pool.
I like the muddler minnow and the steelhead caddis for subsurface and skating.
See picture...this is an example of some of the muddlers I'll tye. This paricular fly, doesn't fish very well but looks cool to me...only been successful with sea runs with this particular fly.
Agreed WL. John Shewey makes a great argument for "fly pattern does not matter--confidance/presentation is everything" Having said that, I enjoy giving thought to the construction of my flies so that its visually applealing and balanced. We could all go to Okie drifters and yarn but where is the fun in that?
