Does anyone have information on what type of spey rod to buy for the area for winter steelheading on local rivers like the sky, skagit, sauk, etc? any brands/stlyes(euro/traditional) that u prefer and whats your general opion on the subject? Also what type of reel should i buy i already have a gunnison G-5 is that big eough?
Any imput will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the information

If you have little of no experience spey casting I would suggest a Sage 9140.

Just courious. I keep hearing about spey rods. What is a good size rod to start with. Don't they run from about 11' to 15' long. I would like to try one but the price scares me off.I see some one mentioned a Sage. Don't they come a little high. I like to fly fish and I think fishing for them in the winter would be a blast. Roll your own. I just finished one 14' long rated for 9/10 weight lines. Total cost < $150.00. I used a Cabela's blank, grips and reel seat. The guides were from Anglers Workshop. There are lots of good books on rodmaking if you haven't done it in the past.

...not my neck of the woods, but I did mine via snail mail order at the businesses I mentioned. No problems at all.

I've been fishing with a spey rod for almost ten years. Mostly on the Cowlitz and other SW rivers. I've built them from early Lamaglas graphite blanks to Sage blanks. I own the SAGE 914/4, and St Croix's 9/10 and their 7/8.
For the money and warranty go with the St. Croix 14 footer, $222.00 or so. Lifetime Warranty. for a 9/10 line. They fish dry line well as well as Hi-D sink tips.
For the reel you need one that holds a 9/10/11 Spey Line, (not a nine or ten weight standard line, there is a difference) As for as backing you will need at least 150 yards of 30 pound backing.
Not that familiar with your G5, but that part is easy to check. :TT

My Spey rod is a 14' St.Croix and is the least expensiver quality rod I could find.I didn;t want to invest a ton of money just to see if I wanted to to spey cast.Talk to Greg at Gregs Custom Rods in LakeStevens for info on ordreing and for rodbuilding supplies.He's a good guy and knows his stuff.Be sure to invest in the RIO spey line for your rod as there is no better product available.I have purchased custom lines from local flyshops twice and both time went back to RIO.If you're local e me and you can meet me near Granite and I'll let you test my St Croix to see if you like it. Heck. I might as well go out and buy one more fly rod. My wife can only get so mad. I can tell her that it was a christmas present from her. I guess that I also have to have a new reel and fly line and spey flies. Well there goes my cars repairs. If I talk nice to her maybe she will let me use her car. Boy, do I ever need lots of luck.
