Speypages - Banned For Life - Really??

17390 Views 77 Replies 41 Participants Last post by  deadhorse
So I sat on this topic for a couple of weeks and thought I would post it as I find it truly amazing. As a 15 year member of Speypages I watched Dana grow the site and forum from its infancy. I appreciate how Sinktip handled the transition into the role of moderator and appreciate his demeanor and steady hand in the role.

Sinktip recently stepped down and 2 new moderators were named. In the new role, one of the moderators demonstrated a very different vibe in handling a couple of threads (of which I was no part) - shutting them down without much of a warning or reason.

Then the new moderator moved on to his first agenda item - the self-bumping of Classifieds. Mind you, as a member this moderator probably had the most self-bumped classified ad in the past 24 months - the listing of 4 Sage Brownies - that was constantly updated and bumped (rather than simply Revised - which does not bump the thread).

I had corresponded with the moderator on an occasion over the sponsors use of classifieds and it was a point on which we didn't agree. I bumped 3 sponsor classified posts to raise the point. I received a PM to which I responded. I receive another PM to which I wrote that I found the new moderators actions 'capricious and ill-directed' and that he was clearly set on running the site with or without many of the existing members. He then banned me for life!

So I contacted him on this site through PM - told him that he took his ball and went home. To which he responded that I better watch out as I only have 44 posts here and he could have me banned here too! And so that did it. Speypages is changing and it is too bad. If I get banned here for raising the point it's a chance I take. I hope one of the common members here will inform the members of Speypages as I have a number of acquittances through the site. I attempted to clean up all of my pending transactions on Speypages but have no way of communicating or checking my PMs there.

Peace.

@Supacash and I will need vehicle make and model, as well as license plate #. We can handle the rest. Curious, which douche bag is it?

I used to participate on Speypages for years. I was invited to join right after it was put up. After a number of years it turned into a bunch of x-spurts that knew everything there was to know about casting and fishing a two handed rod and no one else knew jack. The best one was a guy that told a friend of mine he was full of shit when my friend explained which line to use on a 4 weight Spey. My friend had built the rod and knew exactly which line worked and what didn't but of course the x-spurts knew better.

I haven't been on that site for a number of years. Don't miss it one bit.

It's too bad about speypages. I wasn't in early but enjoyed it for a while. Now it's mostly what line for what rod, actually what skagit line for what rod. Nothing interesting going on there since bunches of the experienced members exited when Dana sold it off.

Edit: Yeah, the speypages fly tying forum has and still does provide serious info and patterns and extremely well done examples. Excellence does swill through the pages fly tying forum!

Appreciate the responses and look forward to hanging out around here. I'm an admitted skagit guy but will keep my posts appropriately balanced!

I wasn't a part of the old speypages but the only reason I go there now is for the classifieds and fly ties.

Sorry you were banned, but judging by your comments it sounds like you were done there anyway. Much friendlier here, just don't piss off the Ed.

Did they (he) accuse you of being a troll? I say that because power trippers can grow hackles too. And you are grumbling, you know.... ? I know in my own case, the sparks can be bigger and brighter than needed. However, enforcement is pretty reasonable.

Also, I found the "Ignore" function beneficial. I am sure that I am a popular resident on many lists.

Perhaps you can take the threat issue to the owner.
That's too bad. A similar thing happened to me over a year ago on Fiberglass Flyrodders. I was a longtime and very active member there. There is one guy on that site who contributes a lot, but unfortunately has a huge ego and tries to bully people. He was called out by numerous people in a flaming thread. I called him out privately to the main moderator (Tom), and his response to me was basically Too bad. He then added a final comment to the flaming thread stating that the egotistical member in question is the most important member on the forum, and the rest of us are second class. I had to read it twice to determine if he was serious (he was). So I left the site and have never posted since. So far, it's my only instance of being Internet Butt Hurt, which is a small number, so I've got that going for me.

Anyway, welcome to WFF, and looking forward to your posts about beading up some steel!

It's a shame to see what that site has become in the last year or two. I rarely even visit anymore, let alone post. Heavy handed moderation could very well be the nail in the coffin.

havent logged on in years..I lost my phone once and emailed them for my password..they said I dont exist. ..ok cya
1) Every forum I've been on you can bump threads. If they don't want them bumped, they lock them down. Why would you merit a lifetime ban for bumping a thread that already exists.

2) How does a moderator over at that site have any authority to ban you on this site, even if you do only have -50 posts.

I'm confused.

Yeah, I pretty much go there to see some of those amazing flies. While I'm there I'll look around and sometimes post. I hope I don't come off as one of those "x-spurts." I've learned a lot, but there's much, much more to learn.
Tight lines,
Keith

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. But I guess the fact that fishing is illegal for anything that would take a bead in WA State this year has probably put the kibosh on that topic here.
I don't think any of our moderators are moderators there.

John I feel bad of your banishment... for life on the other site ???
My dealings with you there was very honest and professional, much appreciated on my end

It is a shame if ya step on the toes with authority it can turn out this way but one knows the boundaries to step across and the warnings of any moderator musta been said
