thought i saw a guy on the river this morning killing it with a set up like ive never seen. It was a 13 ft rod with a spin cast reel that was held on by electrical tape. He could also cast farther than i have ever seen a spin reel throw. Any input on this? thinking of trying it.

Did he look like he had an underhand cast? I used to surf fish the pacific beaches with a 14' surf rod. Don't know what thr electrical tape is all about, but I could imagine. I could cast that surf rod around 150 yds with a levelwind.

i was thinking the electrical tape was to hold the reel on since it was a fly rod, well thats make makes me believe it was a fly rod.

I believe a regular reel will fit on a fly reel seat. you mught have to file down the foot a bit but it should still go on it.

what are the pros and cons to having a spin reel on fly rod? Casting distance? feel?
The pros would be that you're spin fishing. The cons would be you're not flyfishing. Try it and see what you think. If it turns your crank then by all means enjoy it. If you're looking for spin fishing advice on a flyfishing website you might not get the answers you're looking for.

Sounds like the guy found an effective way to fish roe. My .02.

im still a strong fly fisherman but most of all i am a fisherman and fishing the cowlitz dosent always allow you to have the room to fly fish. Not to mention the crowds on the water.

Cause nothing beats a fly rod for sensitivity, crucial for drift fishing, or throwing spoons a mile. My dad has all his spining rods on his guide boat custom built on a fly rod blank. When your drifting bait you really can feel every rock, alot easier to tell if your right on the bottom or a crome steel fish. And a small spinning reel will fit on the seat of a fly rod,

Keith, my dad did the same thing on skinny water. Mono on the reel, leader with a small split shot, and single pautzke or periwinkle. He liked the length of the rod (btw it was a boo) and just sort of underhanded cast to the spot. He'd **** the trout in the cispus, tilton, and sultan. Good times when you're 12. Just sayin.

WHY?!??!??!?
Why dont you just get a rod builder to build you a 13/14/15/25 foot spinning rod? And the reel held on by electrical tape?? Couldnt you just strip the butt section, put on a spinning reel seat and put the rest of the components on?

Mike, I'm raising the BS flag brother, 150 yards, yards? That is 450 feet. Where are you casting from? The deck of the narrows bridge?

I've seen guys cobble together some weird stuff that they had or prepared to get their fishing on. The fish don't care, and frankly you should not care what others think of your gear. Lots of folks will preach as to what you are or are not doing right. I fish the way I fish because it is what I know and what I am comfortable with.

Not sure what the other guy was using, I'm not set up like that.

Ed, Is that BS for "Best Sashimi"? My cousin is an avid gear fisherman and used to pull me along for all kinds of fishing. One of those was Surf Fishing from the Pacific Beaches. So you're casting from the sand with these extra long rods, baitcaster reel on steroids, and 20-30# test. 4oz pyramid lead.....and yes bait [pre flyfishing days]. The cast is a slow figure eight bulding speed and loading up the rod. Hit the right angle and it will sail like no other! 450 feet is not as far as the pros. I met a fella at Grayland that I guess competes. He said he can cast a 12 foot rod 680 feet! Damn! but, now I enjoy getting pummeled out in the waves trying to water haul on breaking waves with the added stupidity of not drilling holes in my new Orvis basket........I didn't plan that trip very well.

But, Surf Fishing is a real thing. It's been around for at least 18 years I think.
