Spring can be the best streamer fishing of the year. I've been tying a ton of new flies, got the boxes filled up, and now ready to get after it.

Wow Swimmy. Don't you ever sleep!?!

Any chance you ever tie up a small Dalai Lama variant pattern - with small black tungsten cone, black/brown color theme on the strips? :)
Hey Swimmy, can I borrow a streamer?

No black/brown. I've got brown/yellow and green/white in a variation. These don't have a stinger...just tied on a regular hook.

My regular Dalai Lama with 3/8 oz cone head and stinger hook. Not my favorite fly to fish as it is bulky and a little heavy to throw.

My gf and I hit one of the nearby tailwaters today. I tried out one of my new flies and this little guy is fishy.

Once wet, it has a nice little taper.

While the streamer bite was a little slow, I did manage to find one player

Meanwhile, she was the hottest fisher on the river.

And even though she was nymphing, she lander her biggest trout of her young career. Pretty cool watching her learn and get better.

Back after it tomorrow to fish a river I haven't visited in several years. Game on.

Do you do well on chartreuse?
I don't fish it as often as white, olive, yellow, or black but I've landed some nice fish on chartreuse. Last weekend chartreuse and white was the ticket drifted under an indicator.

It is definitely a go-to in off colored water.

Do you have a name for that fly yet? If not, I propose it be called the Edgar Winters.

What size hook do you tie that bad boy on? Like the look of that fly.

That collection could rival some shops! Purty!

This one is tied on a size 2 Dai Riki 700. It is my favorite new little fly. Super easy to throw and swims really nice.

I will post up an SBS in the next day or so and hot link it.

That's a pretty blue rod! Salt stick in Montana?
Echo 3s? Great streamer rod if so.

In the shot of the fly when wet, it looks as if you have a little metal eyelet tied in at some point well above your tippet-to-fly connection. How are you using that?

I think it a god forsaken swivel.

Correct. And correct.

Just wrapping up another fun day on the river. As I mentioned we headed out to float a small freestone that I haven't been on for a couple of years. We had to work for fish but we put together a decent day. Here is a quick recap:

I was really excited to test drive another new tie. This is just the articulated version of the streamer that I posted earlier. Man does it look sexy in the water.

Unfortunately ripping streamers proved to be ineffective. Water temps were in the mid 40's and we just couldn't get em moving. We got one small brown late in the day on the strip.

Drifting streamers on the other hand got several nice fish to hand including my fish of the day.

Most of my fish were hanging in deep, slower runs or in the tail outs. A black cone head zonker drifted under an indicator was my fly of the day.

I'm thinking water temps need to come up another 5-10 degrees on the freestones for the streamer but to turn on.

Until then I'm going to try and be out there today to post the hot report you read about tomorrow.
