I'm going to St. Maarten in June and would love to get some fly fishing in. Unfortunately, information is very hard to come by. Has anyone fished from shore there? Does anyone know of a guide and/or charter that caters to fly fishermen? Any information would be appreciated.

Beach fishing on St Maarten is largley unexplored. There seems to be lots of flats that look very fishy. One of the websites I visited recommended bringing your fly rod and exploring on your own. There is plenty of offshore fishing and I imagine there's plenty of Bones, Permit and other fly rod species. I wish I could go with you.

Fish the French side, the dutch side not so good....better beaches. If memory serves me correctly the east sie of the island heading towards the northern french side has some nice water. Take the ferry over to Anguila (sp), worth eploration...if you do so bring lots of water...smaller less touristy = less opportunity to buy water! Anguila is UK.

When I went...6-years ago...it was still recovering from a very bad hurricane which happened a few years previously...I'm sure it still is. You can always chuck a fly at the tarpon which are milling in the old salt ponds, however, not proud to say it is very much like fishing in a garbage dump.

Good luck!

I'll double that the French side is much nicer all round than the Dutch side. My wife and I were there about 7 years ago and stayed in Grand Case (Northwest side of Island). Grand Case had the best dinning by far on the island. I wasn't looking to do any fishing while there but I'll agree that Orient Beach looks like it has the best potential and we did a lot of swimming and snorkeling around Grand Case and the fishing is probably decent there too. But one thing cool to do on the Dutch side besides shopping is sitting at the Sunset Beach Bar or go the beach itself at edge of the Airport Runway, especially when an Air France or KLM 747 comes in! http://www.sunsetbeachbar.com/Members/SBB_Staff/phot_1107291717/sbaf340.jpg/photo_view
