Introduced in House (03/19/2015)

Honor the Nevada Enabling Act of 1864 Act

Directs the Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of the Interior to convey, in phases and without consideration, to the state of Nevada all interest of the United States in federal lands owned, managed, or controlled by the federal government through the USDA or Interior for the purpose of permitting the state to use them to support select beneficiaries. Specifies exceptions, including components of the National Wilderness Preservation System, National Park System, and National Wildlife System, and federally recognized Indian reservations and lands.

Defines "select beneficiaries" as

  • public elementary and secondary education;
  • public higher education;
  • public specialized education;
  • public mental and medical health services;
  • social, senior, and veterans services;
  • public programs for recovery plan development and implementation for candidate and threatened or endangered species; and
  • political subdivisions of the state, but only with respect to payment for services and infrastructure on conveyed identified federal lands that would otherwise be financed through property taxes or other revenues available to a political subdivision of the state.

The government is broke, and has been for a while now.

They gotta come up with new ways of revenue, when taxes don't pass.

Sadly, this is nothing new.

Nonsense. This is how the oligarchs, who most others recognize as gangsters, took over the public property in Russia. Unchecked, the same will happen here, with the same results.

This trend is probably going to get more interesting as it gets more complicated. It definitely calls for a combo of more vigilance.... and more popcorn!:confused:

It's not January 20th yet.

This is happening now, and like I said, has been. Not saying it's right or okay, just that it's nothing "new" per se'. However, we are rapidly reaching (if not already there) information overload. More people are starting to pay attention, and that's a good thing.

Google who owns our national parks.

This isn't new, just a different 'title'. May not be same "entity", but the outcome is the same.

Remember your civics here folks. The legislature of Nevada can pass as many laws as they want regarding this land, but federal law trumps state law. Oh, shit.....

That meter is really fascinating... nearly as mesmerizing as the national debt meter. But you are hitting the target, the elephant in the room. The growing population is outstripping earths carrying capacity. In a way, we are like steelhead and salmon ;).

This is all really interesting, but I don't understand all of the complexities. Someone help dial me if you are in the know. From what I understand, the land is going to be transferred from Federal Govt owned to the State, presumably a land trust. Nev is also about 85% owned by the feds if I recall. What is the evidence that this is all bad? Is it just rumor and speculation, which may very well be the accurate "smoke from the fire" or is there some hard data on what is going to happen to that land?

I also wonder about this in Washington/Oregon. It seems like our State has done a pretty good job of keeping the State land for public use, but perhaps I'm wrong. I'm not sure I want land transferred away from the Fed, but I sure as heck want them to actually start managing their lands. Specifically their timberlands. The spotted owl fiasco locked up all federal lands and all timber management. It has since just sat there unnaturally, without its historical fire cleaning. and become overly dense, bug infested, dead and full of fuels. Now all of that critical habit and wildlife etc is going up in smoke in epic hot fashion. The soil destruction is worse than loosing the trees. Couple that with the community devastation, anyone been to Klickitat lately?. That occurred after the timber supply loss from federal lands made those timber companies financially vulnerable; which left room for the green mail non-sense and finally many of the mills closed up along with the communities (I was part of one of these).

So, because of shite federal management, you've lost thousands and thousands and thousand of acres of habit AND destroyed entire communities (real families with real kids).

Its in no way apples to apples between us and Nevada but up here, the State vastly manages its land better as its people are close to it and actually work with the local communities, tribes and land owners to get real stuff done. I recently saw an article where the State was buying private lands on some river etc to provide public access. Pretty cool. I've seen the land trusts locally in the Gorge buy private lands and restore them. A far cry from a mass sell off. The fed however is just miles of red tape and "studies" but never any meaningful action. Then they claim "Gosh we need more tax dollars!?!!??" while sitting on excellent timber revenue and "shovel ready" jobs.

I'm not sure in the least I want Fed lands moved to the state, but its not like the Feds are doing anything good with it. I will say that regardless of who owns the land, we should equally be up-in-arms about the horrendous management. The land is no good if its all burned up.

If this land transfer is being suggested in the state of Nevada then I suspect that Cliven Bundy and his family is involved. Were getting into the realm of divisive politics here.
