Gentleman-

I am newer to the NORPAC region. I have fished a few of the SW WA rivers. I have a couple buddies wanting to come Steelheading.

First, I am newer to the sport of SH, so my knowledge of the actual fish is limited at best. However, I have been semi successful. I am not seeking your honey hole! But I would like any and all info on SH runs in early spring, late Feb and through March.......

Thanks

Skagit/Sauk if they are open when you get here or out on the Olympic Pennisula. If you're out this way in March, consider coming to the event on the Hoh this year (Hoh down thread).

Good luck!

Check your local public library for "A Passion for Steelhead" by Dec Hogan. This book is a fantastic read on the subject. It has an entire chapter devoted to what you can expect from rivers in each of the 4 seasons.

At that time frame, a bit of a drive, but closer to than the Oregon Coast (?) is the upper Rogue River. Our winter season starts in very late January (water flow/temperature dependent) and runs through late March. The only counter (Gold Ray dam just above Medford) on the river is Here:

I've caught steelhead with flies. I caught three with Dries. I have also caught them with Spinners and with bait. The biggest was about 12 lbs with a Corkie. Out of Pilchuck River.. I have also got salmon with flies.

If I didn't bitch I would blow up. So to keep from blowing up I bitch. Since I'm in Montana and all my fishing buddies are in Washington, this is how I communicate with them. I just got tired of going fishing in Washington and not catching anything bigger than 6".

Don't blow up Jimbo! At least not until New Years Eve, since it's good luck to blow up some fire works to chase away the evil spirits!

Anyway, Merry Christmas and all that! :thumb:
