foul hooked a 6 ft sturgeon in a southern puget sound estuary yesterday. did not have a clue what I had till I seen it. on a size 6 hook. foul hooked another about 4 ft long then there were all around me swimmin reel slow just under the water. almost grabbed one by the tail. must have been 50 of them in that puget sound creek mouth. never seen anything like it before never have even seen a sturgeon in puget sound. but I tell you what that is one tug o war with a 8 wt redington. they can really move in shallow water when hooked with power like a skate. watched silvers jump over my line with not a hookup but the sturgeons made my day. I know the feeling

We fish for gators quite a bit. Especially in after hours when game fishing is over, and sturgeon is open 24/7. But, have been fishing tidal flux in years past. Only using a 8 1/2' 8-12# test rod fishing eggs. I've hooked a few sturgeon (legal though, since it was bait they inhaled it) on that rod. Let me tell you, a 12' sturgeon doesn't stay on long with tackle like that. I saw him come up near surface once, and that was it. I never had a chance.

I heard about some guy cathing sturgeon on a fly, but that's a whole other debate to boot. He soaks fly in shrimp oil. Kind of defeats purpose to me. But that's a different threat all together.
