My brother and I have been traveling on our bicycles and fishing our way through the Americas. The next spot we have highlighted on our map is Southern Belize. Does anyone have any suggestions about a good place to stay and fish? Has anyone done a DIY trip to this area?

Right now we are looking at Placencia but are open to suggestions.

Thanks so much for your time...Seth

If your lucky and meet the right people Placencia could be a treat........cuz DIY on the mainland is difficult, you need access to some kind've boat......to get into the mangroves behind the town.I have caught (and lost) big tarpon right off the beach in town fishing bait. But if someone takes pity on you and you pay for gas say there is great fishing within 20 or so miles .Another choice that I have made many times would be to go out to the anti -resort of Glover's reef atoll rent a kayak and fish inside or near the resort + the diving is world class and theres lots of small bones /big barracuda/grouper/snapper etc.But on't expect to be waited on and youll have to leave your bikes in Sittee river, but you can camp and the coconuts are free...........

Seth - Really awesome what you and your brother are doing - thank you very much.

In terms of Placencia, not sure it's worth it unless you can score a ride out to the cayes, where you can take shots at permit all day long (at least that was the scene when I was there - month of July a couple years back). I did spend a couple days scoping the beaches as well, and the best place I found was across the street from a hotel/condo called Laru Beya - had easy access to the mangroves. I couldn't see the tarpon as the water was super murky, but I spooked quite a few blind casting and moving through the water - looked like fairly big boys. Even though there were some there, I still wouldn't really recommend it however as I'm not sure how feasible landing one would be - so many places that fish could go while you're stuck at the water's edge.

Again, if you can get a tour of the cayes, I'd definitely recommend it; if not, I'd keep looking - probably some other better options. Thanks again to you and your brother - Rob

If you are planning on spending any money, look up Earl Godfrey in Placencia or Lloyd Nunez in Hopkins. Hard working and gifted at finding permit tails. We jumped some Tarpon in the Sittee but access is limited.

Nice effort guys. I can hook you up with someone who guides in Chile who will appreciate what you are doing and I can tell you about DIY in Argentina if you are going that way. Cheers.

This is all awesome info. Thanks guys. We are getting close to Guatemala now and are excited to try out our new rods in Belize. We got a great hookup to fish Tarpon Caye lodge and will be posting a full report after we do so. We will also be taking a boat trip from Caulker Caye all the way back down to Placencia which should give us a full run of the water. avs16...I'm definitely going to hit you up for some more info. I've been dreaming about pontential DIY trips in Argentinia and Chile for years and now it's becoming a little more real.
