As some of you know I am a very amateur Fisher, and an even more amateur fly Fisher. I have caught plenty of fish on gear setups, but only a handful on a fly, none of the catches being on either of my two newest setups.

For whatever reason there seems to be a minimum of a one month probation period anytime I get a new rod. I can't catch a single fish on any new rod to save my life. Well today I ended the curse for my newest rod, a very slightly used 4wt Sage Accel I got from a fellow member. I was able to catch a baby trout on a dry fly while floating my favorite local lake. Unfortunately between learning the new fly gear and getting my pontoon back out for the first real fishing day in a long time, this was my only fish. However I did get many bites that were being spit back out quickly, and everyone on the dock was doing well. I tried nymphing for the first time with no luck.

Obviously this is no award winning fish, but it symbolizes the end of my dry streak

Pretty sure I saw you out there - nice job, those fish were NOT biting anything for me, even when I tried gear for a while.

You probably did, I live ten minutes away so I fish there the most. Now that it's warming up, my friend and I will be out on the water regularly.

I ended up having luck along the shoreline, under the trees.

I was on the dock, saw fish jumping less than 10 ft. from shore. Any idea what they were feeding on?

Those were all the newly stocked baby trout feeding on insects landing on the water. Wasn't able to get close enough to see which types of insects, but they were going crazy for small dry flies. I just couldn't get them to hold onto it long enough to set the hook.

I was trying streamers - duh I should have tied on a dry. Well, live and learn I guess. Might be back soon.

Came back today. Only fished from shore for about 30 minutes but caught a similar little fish on a Parachute Adams. I used an interesting setup I was trying for the first time - tippet tied to a grasshopper, then another length of line tied back to the smaller fly. The idea is that the grasshopper stops my crappy fly line from dragging down the fly and also acts as a strike indicator/a way to see the fly in low light or choppy conditions. Less fish activity today - seems like they are spreading out from where they were put in.

Side note - am I the only one that is disappointed by the new dock with far less fishing area? Seems like a pointless change.

Hopper dropper in April is a bold strategy. Glad it worked. That lake is tough...

Me too. Just to clarify, the hopper was mainly a strike indicator, the Adams a few feet back was meant to do the real damage. Small fish, difficult fish (in my experience), but I always find it fun to catch em on a dry.
