To top it off, I caught a rainbow of similar size. Was on some private water in Georgia and they have some lunkers. Maiden voyage for a new 5 wt...what a way to break it in.

And for Swimmy, I was wearing a faded blue t-shirt with sand colored waders and a sand fishing vest with a mustard hat. During a rain storm I had a forest and black gore-Tex jacket on. I was quite colorful, albeit in in mostly earth tones. I think that was what allowed me to do so well today.

That will put a bend to your rod !!!!!

Fucking eh!!!!
My buddy has been telling me about some toads they are catching down in N. Georgia. Looks like you found one. Congrats on the PR!
Looks like fun water to fish!

Do you know what river(s)?
Does private water count!? JK, I have been privy to private sections of creek that still rank up there in my memory banks.
It's a heckuva fish and Tommy should be stoked. I would be. But it's a little different down there. They stock and feed on the private water. I've caught and kept fish down there, downstream from private "trophy" waters, and the fish were stuffed with corn and pellet mush.
Yes, the Soque. It is not the same experience as catching a lunker on a pristine western river like the Madison, etc but it is a thrill nonetheless.

Beautiful fish, did they fight well? What do they charge to fish these waters? Not a big fan of PW but there's a place for it.

This was $160 for the day. Grew up in Georgia and have fished a lot in the south - NC, TN, GA - but had never fished this river, so bit the bullet to try it out to see what the fuss is about.

Edit - yes, they fought well. Rainbows did their typical spastic moves and acrobatics and browns more like underwater freight trains.
Congrats. It's cool that we have such a wide array of great fishing options all across the country.

I hope I didn't come across snooty about your catch. It's a great fish for sure. I would fish that water if I had the chance. It looks nice. The only access I had on the Soque was a little further down. Sandy bottomed and snaggy as heck, but still trout water. It's a crying shame there's not better access to that river. There's only so many decent trout streams in North Georgia!

p.s. Even the Madison River--another great river to fish--isn't exactly "pristine"; see Hebgen Dam and Ennis Dam.

Not all all. Like you said, can't be too choosy in GA. Mostly small streams with small fish - still a lot of fun if you go light rod. NC and TN have their share as well.

I thought about your thoughts on the Madison before I posted, but there are so few truly pristine rivers anywhere in the lower 48. Maybe the Yellowstone is the best example but even that has its issues with the Yellowstone cuts.

Very true. I'm an overly literal SOB at times.

In North GA I used to seek out the remnant brookies. Sadly, I usually found rainbows.
