I got a rebel xt and have been playin around with it. I want to do some exposure pictures and that kinda thing but i need a tripod. Anyone got any suggestions for cheaper and lighter tripods. I would likely be taking it up hiking sometimes also

For stitching you can't beat PTGui (http://www.ptgui.com/) but it's quite expensive. I use it professionally. Hugin (http://hugin.sourceforge.net/) is an open source and free stitcher that does a decent job but there is a steeper learning curve and it can be a real pain to set up.

What type of pano do you want to do? Just a super wide one of a landscape (mountains, sound?) or a 360deg x 180deg immersive one? The techniques, skill requirement, and equipment are quite different.

Just mountains, sounds, etc. Does lens really effect the quality of the photo? I still have got the 18-55 kit lens but have not decided if i want a wide lens or tele yet. I also dont have money to get one yet.
