I haven't done one of these in a while, so I thought that I would put a new one out there.

I when out to the Upper Ruby yesterday. It was just a short jaunt on a few gravel roads. I left my house and proceeded out of Dillon. After two miles of Paved roads I started on gravel roads. I didn't get off the gravel roads until I got back home. 130 miles of dust and rocks and blowing sand.

The place I went to is 60 miles from my back door. There are many beaver ponds up in the area I went to and all have many closed mouth fish in there. I got a hit on my first fly in the water and on my second cast I got a fish. A Rocky Mountain Whitefish. About 10" on a Caddis fly. Then nothing. So I changed flies to a Stimulator and I got another hit. Like I said, closed mouth fish. Lots of hits but no takers.

Now I know why I don't fish as much as I did when I was younger. About one hour out in the sun, changing flies. Just about killed me. It must of been the sun because that's about all I can think of that would do me in. Unless it was my old age.

I also did something I haven't done in many years. I thought that I would partake in a 6 pack of beer. The brand doesn't matter as it was just beer. Now I know why I like Jim Beam. I can get a buzz off a few drinks of whiskey, but drinking beer just fills me up.

I tried several different spots on the river but in the end I just about did a day of exploring. I checked out Ledford Creek, but in the end I was just getting tired so I bagged it. But all in all it was a good day because I got out. I might do it again as soon as I get my strength back. The hot sun just about does me in.

Well, I guess I can understand. I find that at my age it is easier to stay home than to climb into waders and walk all that far to chase fish. My fly boxes and rod cases have dust on them.

I am getting ready to change that though, with the cooler weather and fall colors. Going over the hill sometime this week and trying some caddis and
hoppers.

That said, when the cold winds of November blow I will be sitting in my easy
chair with my hot coffee and thinking of all the fun I am missing on the river bank.

October is one of the best months to fish. In fact my son and I just now are preparing for our annual 9 day trip to our two favorite rivers. Nine days of enjoying the coolness and fall colors that mother nature will provide sitting stream side eating our MRE's. It is indeed a great way to close out our fishing year. We can hardly wait to get there.:):):)

Thanks for the useless report Jim. Sounds like a good day exploring and I bet you slept good. One of these fine fall days you'll hit it just right and will be able to give us all a really useless report!

It's about time you posted a "Useless fishing report"
Stay after it, I don't care if ya catch any fish, just get out and enjoy Gods country.

I have found out that I don't fish as much in the summer as I did when in Washington. Now I try to get out much more when it cools down. In the winter months I can get out almost every day. It's cooler then and the heat doesn't take it's toll on me.

I still like it here in Montana. But my mean temps are around 75 degrees. Any hotter and I tend to tire easily. Cooler and I can stay out longer. And as for wearing waders, I haven't had to wear any since March of this year. Where I fish the bank is as close as I get to the water.

Here's another question for you Jim, from the looks of your shadow pic you are not wearing a hat or it's a baseball cap?
I've found the baseball cap is good for the cooler climates but hellish in full sun.
If you don't have one, go get yourself a cowboy hat or something with a full brim if you're not the cowboy type.

You'll notice the difference.

But what the hell do I know??
I'm not the Old Man....
