Hi all,

From Colorado here but you all seem to know a lot about your Sage rods. I have an old Sage that was given to me by my dad, along with an old Ross reel (no sentimental value, I think he bought it and used it maybe once or twice). They have been great for me getting started with fly fishing but I am now looking to get a 4 piece 4wt so that I can pack my rod more easily while I travel. I'm looking to sell these and was hoping someone could help me come up with a good price so I can buy a new rig. Thank you so much in advance!

Those older Ross reels are gems and well thought of, much more so then their newer reels.
No idea of the value but if priced right you’ll have no problem selling it as folks are always looking for nice click and pawl reels.
There is a #2 Colorado with a spare spool on EBay for $220.00.

Based on eBay sold items I would say somewhere in the $150 ish range range each item.

eBay sold items is probably the easiest way I have found to research value.

The original colorado series reels are worth about $90 to $120 dollars in nice used shape. About what they cost new. You can certainly pay more than that if you want to bid it up and somebody else wants it too.
Ross still supports these reels and will send you drag springs pawls and ratchet gears if needed (no charge). You can also make your own drag springs out of piano wire. They are just sweet simple bullet proof trout reels.

Edit: they may have gone up in value over the last year or so?

For several reasons:

1) Machined and anodized pawl/gear reel. Really aren't similar reels at this price point, now or when it was produced.
2) Light and strong for being a machined reel.
3) Made in America.
4) Legendary Ross reel warranty and service.
5) They just don't make 'em like they used to. When this reel was offered, it was considered a big 'bang for the buck' reel due to those attributes noted in 1) - 3).

Agree with the pack here. Been using Sage/Ross combos since I first got serious about my gear.Have put my first generation Evolution reels through hell and they still work perfectly; I'm sure the Colorado is no exception.To be honest, it seems to me you have a good set up already and should just concentrate on getting the rod you want.Sages are expensive, but in this case,you get what you pay for.Good luck.

Well if it were me I would not sell either, cause ya always need a back up rod/reel.
Sierratrading post and amazon will have good deals on four piece rod/reel combos.
The Gorge fly shop has some closeouts right now.
Shop around and check in with your local fly shop for end of the season sales

Sorry, had to recharge.I would only add that, if you're not married to the idea of owning a Sage, look into Temple Fork Outfitters or Echo rods.These offer high quality at more than reasonable prices; the Echo rods are designed by world class caster Steve Rajeef and the TFO's by fly fishing icon Lefty Kreh.

Why sell either? If you trout fish in Colorado, I can't imagine not wanting and using a 9' 5 wt rod, or having one in my collection of rods. And that Sage you have is a good one. As for the Ross Colorado II, you have one of best value reels on the planet. They sold for about $100 - $105 new around year 2000, and sell for that much or more now, because they still offer more value per dollar than most any trout fly reel available. They are machined aluminum, anodized, have tighter tolerances than a Hardy, and will more likely than not last a lifetime, and probably longer. Why get rid of something like that? Yes, I'm biased. I have two Ross Colorados.
