Cut my last one into pieces and in the trash it went.
Mailed mine already, but thanks for the reminder, @Ron McNeal . "Retiring minds need to know," lol.

I heard about a guy that got checked, it was past the due date for the cards, had it with his license - ticket....
I've never had one, so I'm not too worried about it.
If you don't return it, they will hound you, even if you have nothing to report.

Ticket for what? That doesn't sound plausible. It's not an offense to fail to turn in CRCs, except for crab. Nonetheless, WDFW does need the data, and it's important to understand that zeros are data too.

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't you "required" turn in your catch card even if there are no entries? If that is not the case, I bow to you and stand corrected. Perhaps he had the crab on the CRC.

Take a little look at page 8, in the last printed regs - and "requires all anglers to return their fish CRC by April 30" or "for Dungeness crab by the date indicted on the card".

Maybe you have a different interpretation.

Scott,

Required is subject to interpretation when there is no penalty for failing to return CRCs. Again, unless listed as an offense in the RCWs, no ticket with a fine can be issued since no violation of law has occurred. Failure to comply with an unenforceable "requirement" falls significantly short of no complying with a law or regulation that contains a penalty for such failure.

No penalty for salmon crc= Not required in my book

That said I always send mine in
Whether required by law to return it or not shouldn't be the point here. It should be returned regardless, out of our duty and respect for the resource. Pretty hard to blame WDFW on our current situation if we don't provide them the information that helps them do their jobs...sounds similar to complaining about the politicians in office but not voting.

My apologies for causing this continued conversation. Are you required to have a fishing license? Is there a penalty for not having a license?

Penalty or not, turn in your catch card, it does help.

Nick, sg, I will defer to your wisdom and will you never comment on this again.

Micro brew
No need to turn this into a huge deal. I don't believe anyone is arguing that the catch record cards shouldn't be turned in.

But in the world we live in if something is truly required there is generally some sort of consequence for not following through. I. E. crab catch record cards and the 10 dollar fine for not returning them.

A fishing license is not required in general. But it is required if one is going to fish, and there is consequences for fishing without one. If the state said a fishing license was required for fishing, but then implemented zero punishment for fishing without one, how many people would go buy one?

As far as voting and turning the cards in, that argument doesn't hold weight with me since I do not believe in our democracy nor our system of voting. Therefore I find voting completely silly and refuse to do so. I will bitch about people in power because it is my belief that individual voting doesn't put them there, and I don't believe in our system. Nor do I believe that the WDFW will do anything positive with the information they receive from these cards. But that's neither here nor there, and certainly not relevant to this thread.

But like I said, I always return them anyway in the hope that maybe the data will be useful and help future fishing seasons, even if I don't personally believe that to be the case.
