Don and I put on about 130 miles of forest roads under our tires yesterday between the White River and Sugarloaf Lookout on the quest for grouse. We saw one mature bird, which I actually missed (OMG!!!) at about 35-40 yards. Shot right over his head with my extra full barrelbawling: That was the only mature bird we saw. We did come home with two very young ones, but what it showed is that these are "second clutch" birds. I have to attribute this to the long wet, cool spring. We may not have had a lot of the first clutch birds survive due to the weather. So in this area, it's probably better to give `em another week or so to completely feather out in the tail area.
