Last Friday I was outside with a friend when I heard
the sound of a whale blowing. I said whale and we hurried
down to the beach. We could see something about 100 yards
out coming towards shore. A second later the water explodes
with a giant mouth opens and bait fish (chum fry) twinkling
in the sun getting consumed. A few minutes later the same thing.
I would say the humpback we saw was only about 200 feet off the beach.

The next day we saw a much larger humpback in the middle of the bay.

Today I am mowing the lawn I stop to empty the gas catcher and I hear it again.
Down to the beach and there are 8 killer whales cruising the east shoreline heading to Allyn. I watched them with the neighbors until they headed back south.
Way cool.

It was all to fast. I might have something.
To see the humpback mouth wide open
with chum fry flying out and in its mouth was
special.. Never seen it before and I would guess
never again.

Awesome! Saw some reports of transient orcas in the South Sound last week. Maybe the same pod. Apparently they spend more time in the Salish Sea during the shoulder seasons when most of the resident pods are out at the mouth of the Columbia or Fraser feeding on springers.

Maybe the transients will clear out a few seals and sea lions before the salmon arrive.

They came back today. Once around 9 am and then
about 3. According to the resident expert this pod
is from Alaska. Tons of bait fish in North Bay.
I had never seen that many at one time. There
are pics on FB. Dave
